All this talk makes me miss physical books. No batteries, no sync, no updates. The 'progress' is a physical bookmark. The downside, of course, is you can't carry a library in your pocket. But for a dedicated reading session at home, a physical light novel with the color inserts just hits different.
I've started buying physical copies of my absolute favorites, and then if I want to read on the go, I'll... acquire a digital version separately. It's not strictly legal, but if I've already paid for the book, I don't feel bad about loading an EPUB onto my phone for convenience. The sync problem is solved by me manually finding my place. A hassle, but a peaceful one.
Honestly, half the time I forget what app I'm even reading a specific novel in. I'll spend 10 minutes opening BookWalker, Kindle, and Kobo trying to find which one has the bookmark for 'Overlord' volume 12. The sync might work within the app, but my brain has no sync for which app to open.
Sometimes the problem isn't the app, it's your account. I spent weeks blaming BookWalker for bad sync until I realized I had accidentally created two different accounts years apart—one with an old email. I was logged into different accounts on my phone and tablet. Once I consolidated, the sync worked perfectly.
Might be worth everyone's time to double-check they're using the same login across all devices. Sounds dumb, but it happens more often than you'd think, especially if you've ever cleared app data or switched between Google and Facebook logins.
The frustration with app sync is a symptom of a bigger issue: digital content ownership is broken. We're renting licenses to read in specific apps. If the app's sync fails, or the company goes under, our reading history—that personal journey—is gone. A physical book never loses your bookmark unless you lose the book.
I'm starting to buy DRM-free EPUBs from publishers who offer them (not many in light novels, sadly) and just managing them myself. The sync is a problem I own, not one a corporation can break for me. It's more work, but it feels more permanent. My library is a collection of files, not a list of permissions.
This whole thread is making me appreciate librarians. They never had to deal with this nonsense. 'The sync between the central library and the branch library is that you physically return the book to one and check it out at the other.' Analog solutions for an analog world.
Maybe we overcomplicate things. The simplest sync is having your entire library on a device you always carry. A phone with a big storage and a good reader app. No sync needed because there's nowhere else to read from. It's a limiting solution, but sometimes constraints simplify life beautifully.

Elina thought she had hit rock bottom.
She lost her job. Her therapy session dredged up memories of the ex-boyfriend who stalked and traumatized her. The only thing she had left to look forward to was the finale of her favorite fantasy series, Moonbound Faith.
Then the show ended.
The heroes won. The villain died. Everyone got their happily-ever-after.
That same night, a knock at her door shatters what little peace she has left.
Her ex is standing outside.
The man who was supposed to be in prison.
Forced to flee into a storm, Elina runs until she reaches the edge of a cliff with nowhere left to go. Faced with a choice between death and returning to the man who destroyed her life, she jumps.
But instead of dying, she wakes up inside Moonbound Faith.
Not as the heroine.
Not as a side character.
But as Luna—the infamous villainess whose tragic death she celebrated only hours before.
Determined to survive, Elina plans to use her knowledge of the story to change her fate. But everything she thought she knew begins to unravel when a small boy tugs on her sleeve and calls her one word:
“Mom.”
The original story never mentioned a child.
And when Elina uncovers the truth behind his existence, she realizes something terrifying.
The villainess was never the villain.
The story lied.
And the ending she remembers may not be the ending waiting for her at all.

I woke up inside a novel, and not even as an important character.
I became a pretty background extra in a smut novel.
My brother, however, was the only normal person in the entire story.
His character setting was the one man the soft, delicate heroine could never win over.
He was the cold, unattainable Prince Charming she could never conquer.
When the heroine cried and confessed her love, he was studying.
When she offered him her whole heart and body, he was busy starting a company.
When she spiraled into scandals and nightlife, he was already a billionaire, calm and untouchable.
I thought he would live a quiet, ascetic life forever.
Until one night, I walked in on him at midnight…
holding a piece of clothing I recognized all too well, murmuring a name over and over, a name so familiar that my scalp tingled.
Elise is an unemployed woman from the modern world and she transmigrated to the book "The Lazy Lucky Princess." She hated the book because of its cliché plot and the unexpected dark past of the protagonist-Alicia, an orphan who eventually became the Saint of the Empire. Alicia is a lost noble but because of her kind and intelligent nature the people naturally love and praise her including Elise.
When Elise wakes up in the body of the child and realizes that she was reincarnated to the book she lazily read, she struggles on how to survive in the other world and somehow meets the characters and be acquainted with them. She tried to change the flow of the story but the events became more dangerous and Elise was reminded why she hated the original plot.
Then Alicia reaches her fifteen birthday. The unexpected things happened when Elise was bleeding in the same spot Alicia had her wound. Elise also has the golden light just like the divine power of the Saint.

I'm curious about the data privacy aspect. When you use Kindle or Google Play Books sync, your reading progress and habits are being recorded on their servers. That's valuable data. Some people might not care, but for others, it's a concern.
Using a manual sync method with your own cloud storage (like a encrypted folder) gives you more control. You're trading convenience for privacy. It's a personal choice, but it's worth being aware of what you're trading for that seamless 'open and continue' experience.
I use Voice Dream Reader for audiobook versions of text-based novels, and its sync across iOS devices is perfect. I know the question was about reading, but if you consume light novels via text-to-speech while doing other tasks, this is a critical feature.
You can start listening on your phone, then continue from the exact same word on your iPad. It's a different mode of consumption, but for dense fantasy novels with long descriptions, listening can be a great way to get through them, and seamless sync makes it viable.
