Technically, 'The Maid' is a standalone. But I'd argue its place in a 'reading order' is more thematic. If you enjoy books with neurodivergent narrators solving crimes, like 'The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time' or 'The Rosie Project', then slot 'The Maid' right into that lineup.
It fits perfectly after those kinds of character-driven stories. As for Nita Prose's own catalog, it's the inaugural entry. There's no chronology to worry about, only the hope that Molly's unique perspective will grace more bookshelves in the future. For now, this one book holds its own beautifully.

My copy of 'The Mystery Guest' has a preview of 'The Maid' in the back. That should tell you everything. The publisher assumes you read them in order and uses the second book to promote the first to new readers.
It's a publishing clue. They are presented as a sequence, not as interchangeable standalone novels.

The only 'order' that matters is the order of events within the novel itself. And even that is beautifully straightforward, told from Molly's clear, methodical perspective. There are no flashbacks to other cases, no references to past adventures.
So the Nita Prose reading order mirrors the book's own structure: linear, direct, and satisfyingly complete. You follow Molly's timeline from the discovery of the body to the resolution. That's the entire journey. There are no hidden branches or alternate paths to explore in other books.

It's book one of one. Full stop. There's no series, so no order. The book had a huge marketing push and got a lot of buzz, which probably makes it seem like part of a bigger franchise, but it's not.
It's just a really successful debut. Molly's story is complete within the novel, though the door is definitely left open for more adventures. So your 'order' is: 1. Read 'The Maid'. 2. Tell your friends about it. 3. Join the waitlist for whatever Prose writes next, which will presumably be a sequel or something entirely new.

From a librarian's perspective, we catalog it as a standalone mystery. There is no series title attached to the MARC record. When patrons ask, we tell them it's a single title.
Its place in the reading order is wherever you fancy—after a heavy literary novel as a palate cleanser, before a thriller as a lighter entry, or just on its own when you need a book with both brains and heart. The only mandatory step is reading 'The Maid' itself. Everything else is optional.

Levi Stone is an alpha, who is rumored to be ruthless, cold, and merciless. He kills as a sport and anyone who dears to defy him has yet lived to tell the tale. Even other alphas are afraid of him and despite his young age, he holds more power and land than even the Alpha King.
So, what does Alpha Stone do, when a young, attractive woman is being thrown into his arms by her older, malicious brother? The only logical thing a man could think of, of course:
He makes her, his maid…
NB: Does NOT include predestined mates!
Other in "The Maid" Series:
1: The Alpha's Maid
2: The Master's Maid
3: The King's Maid
4: The Sentinel's Maid
5: The Lycan's Maid
Warning: Dark and BDSM theme story which involves highly adult content in the beginning.
A naive maid who worked for two domineering billionaire brothers was attempting to hide from them because she had heard that if their lustful eyes fell on any woman, they made her their slave and owned her mind, body, and soul.
What if she one day came across them? Who would hire her to serve as his personal maid? Who would control her body? Whose heart would she rule? Who would she fall in love with? Who would she despise?

“Please don’t punish me. I’ll be on time next time. It is just that-“
“If next time you speak without my permission, I’ll shut you up with my shaft.” My eyes enlarge, listening to his words.

“You belong to me, Kitten.” He pounds into me hard and fast, going deeper into me with his every thrust.
“I… be…long.. to you, Master…” I’m just moaning insanely, clenching my hands behind my back.

It’s another thing to have a family that cares about you
And it’s something else to have a family who doesn’t give a shit about you.

She succeeds in selling her off, but fortunately, she is bought by a sweet and handsome billionaire named Ethan Cross.
Starting a new life as his maid, will Mia finally get the peaceful life she deserves? What happens when she begins to feel something strong for her nice boss?
One Forbidden Night. Three Brothers. No Way Out.

But one reckless night with a mysterious stranger shatters that rule. The next morning, he's gone... And so is her sense of control.
She never expected to see him again.
She definitely didn’t expect to find herself working as a live-in maid for the ruthless, filthy-rich Moretti brothers—Ethan, Aidan, and Evan.
Each man is powerful, possessive, and hiding secrets behind cold eyes and cruel smiles. Millie swore she’d keep things professional... but lines blur fast in a house full of temptation and danger.
Now she's caught in their web—a pawn in a brutal game of power, lust, and blood-soaked secrets.
To them, she’s supposed to be just the maid. But what happens when all three brothers want more?
Three kings. One maid. No mercy.
When Elsie arrived the Lancaster mansion as a maid, she had only one goal, to destroy the ruthless sons of the family for what they took from her. But what happens when she is trapped into the web of their sexual fantasies? She shouldn't find them attractive, but they were simply irresistible.

The 'correct' order is whatever the author and publisher present. On Amazon, in the 'Books in Series' section, it lists 'The Maid' as #1 and 'The Mystery Guest' as #2. That's the definitive commercial answer. Everything else is personal preference.
You know, sometimes I envy people who get to discover a series after a couple books are out. You get to binge! That's you right now. Your 'binge order' is unequivocally publication order. Make some tea, get cozy, and start with 'The Maid'. You have a lovely, uninterrupted story ahead of you.
Ultimately, the only person who can answer this is you. What's your reading personality? Do you feel a compulsive need to start at the absolute beginning of a character's timeline? Then start with 'The Maid.' Does the concept of a rigid order feel restrictive? Then grab whichever one calls to you.
Your personal enjoyment protocol is the only one that matters. Both books are bestsellers for a reason—they work. They work in order, and they work out of order. So empower yourself. Choose based on your mood, the cover, the blurb, or the weather. You can't make a wrong choice.
I believe the count is two published novels. Nita Prose might be planning more, but she's also a busy editor. 'The Maid' was such a phenomenon that a sequel was inevitable. 'The Mystery Guest' delivers more of what fans loved. Read them in publication order for the full arc.
They connect through the setting of the Regency Grand Hotel, which is practically a character itself. The order isn't about a grand saga; it's about the deepening portrait of this workplace and its quirky staff. Read 'The Maid' to learn the lay of the land, then 'The Mystery Guest' to see how that micro-society reacts to another shock. The series feels like checking in on a familiar, slightly chaotic family.
