You know, I never really thought about it. I just read them as they came out. I guess if you're doing a deep dive now, it's a puzzle to solve. For us old-timers, it was just the next Connelly book, and we were always happy to see a familiar face pop up.

Wait, someone mentioned 'The Black Echo' isn't a standalone. True. But for a new reader, it is a standalone story. It just happens to be the first thread. From that single thread, Connelly wove this entire tapestry of characters and cases. The standalones that tie in are just other colored threads in the same weave.

So, Connelly's universe is so interconnected that 'standalone' is kind of a loose term. 'The Poet' and 'The Scarecrow' feature reporter Jack McEvoy, but Harry Bosch appears in 'The Scarecrow' helping on a case, which firmly plants that book in the timeline post-'The Narrows' I believe. 'The Brass Verdict' is technically a Mickey Haller book, but it's also the full-on crossover point where Bosch becomes a major recurring character in that series, continuing the storyline from 'Echo Park' and 'The Overlook'. Then you have 'The Wrong Side of Goodbye', which is a Bosch novel, but it heavily features the San Fernando PD side of his life that was introduced in the earlier standalone 'The Crossing'. It's all one big, messy, wonderful world.

Which Michael Connelly books are essential before watching the Bosch series?

I bounced off the first book years ago. Then I watched the show and became obsessed. Went back and tried 'The Concrete Blonde' and loved it. Sometimes the visual medium gives you the faces, the pace, the vibe, and then the books become a way to spend more time with characters you already love. There's no shame in that path. It worked perfectly for me.
