How Does The Monster Hunter Grimoire Fit Into The Series Order?

I'm piecing together the Monster Hunter International timeline and got stuck where Grimoire lands among the books. Where should this one slot in for proper reading order?

It's a companion book, plain and simple. You wouldn't read a DVD commentary before watching the movie, right? Same principle applies here. The Grimoire is fantastic—don't get me wrong—full of beautiful illustrations and detailed monster bios, but it's not a novel. It doesn't belong in the series order like a volume 5 or 6. Read the main novels first to fall in love with the world and its dangers, then dive into the Grimoire to satisfy your curiosity about every claw and scale. Putting it in the middle would just be an awkward, pacing-breaking info dump.

Meh. I bought it, flipped through it once, and it's been on my shelf collecting dust for two years. The art is gorgeous, but I just don't have the urge to sit and read encyclopedia entries for fun. The novels are propulsive and fun; this feels like homework. So, for people like me, it doesn't fit into the series order at all. It's a decorative item. And that's okay! Not every piece of merchandise needs to be a vital chapter. Sometimes a cool art book is just a cool art book.

The audiobook version is narrated by a different voice actor, which reinforces its separation from the main storyline. It feels like listening to a nature documentary about a fantasy world. That tonal shift alone tells you it's not meant to be listened to in the middle of a tense, first-person narrative. Enjoy it as a separate, standalone production. Its 'order' is whenever you want a change of pace. Maybe listen to it on a long drive after you've finished the latest novel, to let the world sink in without the pressure of a new plot.

Honestly, I forgot this thing existed until this thread. Now I'm wondering if I should dig it out. I'm in the middle of a re-read, so maybe I'll try the 'reward chapter' method mentioned above. See if it adds anything. If not, back on the shelf it goes. I guess my point is, its importance is so minimal to the core experience that you can completely forget about it and still have a 100% fulfilling time with the series. That probably tells you all you need to know about its place in the 'order.'

Honestly, trying to fit it into a linear order gives me a headache. The Grimoire doesn't advance the plot of the main characters at all; it's pure worldbuilding. If you're a completionist who needs everything in 'chronological' order, you could theoretically read it at any point after the first couple of books, but why force it? I'd say just enjoy the main series for the story and pacing it's built for, then circle back to the Grimoire when you want to spend more time in that universe. Treating it as mandatory reading in sequence risks bogging down the narrative momentum with encyclopedic entries.

Where do the Monster Hunter Chronicles books fit in the series order?

If you're a completist, I'd suggest this: Read novels 1-8. Then read 'Memoirs' 1-3. Then read 'Chronicles' and 'Files'. That gives you the full, uninterrupted core story, then the big side-story, then all the little bits and pieces. That's how I did it, and it felt very satisfying.

Where does Monster Hunter World fit in the Monster Hunter series order?

6 回答2026-08-03 00:50:16
From a pure lore and monster roster perspective, World introduced a ton of new monsters while also bringing back fan favorites with stunning new visuals. Its place is as a 'greatest hits' album with a bunch of new tracks. Monsters like Anjanath and Odogaron became instant classics, while returning monsters like Rathalos and Diablos got complete visual overhauls. So in the order of monster design, it's a renaissance. The creatures feel more alive, more dangerous, and more integrated into their habitats than ever before. This set a new benchmark for what a Monster Hunter monster should be. Future games will be judged on whether their monsters feel as dynamic and believable as World's roster. Even the lower-tier monsters like Great Jagras have more personality and interesting behaviors than many old monsters. That attention to detail is World's legacy.

How do the Monster Hunter spin off books fit into the main series order?

Man, I miss the old forum days where we'd argue about whether a certain novel's depiction of Gravios behavior was canon. Good times. The ambiguity was the point. It sparked discussion and deep dives into ecology notes. Maybe that's their real purpose: to fuel fandom debates, not to provide answers.

How do handheld titles fit into the Monster Hunter series in order?

Does anyone else miss the farm? And the fishing minigames? The PSP games had these chill, almost life-sim elements in the village that slowly got streamlined out. The handheld order shows a gradual shift from a 'hunter life simulator' to a more focused 'hunting action game'. I have nostalgia for the former, but I understand the efficiency of the latter.

What is the correct Monster Hunter book series order?

I'm waiting for someone to post a definitive infographic. I'll just bookmark this thread and check back later. My to-read pile is big enough without me spending an hour researching the proper sequence for a monster-slaying book series. No offense to the franchise, I love it, but this is why I usually just play the games.

How do the Monster Hunter International Grimnoir tie-in books fit in order?

8 回答2026-08-03 22:51:46
Forget strict chronological order across series; think of it as an optional bonus level. The main Grimnoir trilogy is a self-contained story set in an alternate 1930s. The main Monster Hunter International series (starting with the self-titled book) is its own modern-day thing. The tie-in happens in the 'Monster Hunter Memoirs' sub-series, which are side stories about other hunters. Specifically, 'Monster Hunter Memoirs: Saints' is the crossover novel. So if you're a completionist, you'd read the Grimnoir trilogy, then the MHI core books up to 'Vendetta', then read 'Saints'. It enriches the lore of both but isn't required to follow either main series.

How does the Monster Hunter Grunge spin off fit into the series reading order?

4 回答2026-08-03 18:07:34
The beauty of Monster Hunter's expanded fiction is that it's all optional paths. 'Grunge' is one of the most distinct paths. It's a pre-Guild story, so in terms of world history, it's set earliest. But that's just trivia. What matters is its self-contained nature. You could absolutely read it first and not be confused, but you might not grasp how radically it differs from the norm. I'd suggest getting the 'norm' from somewhere else first—maybe play 'Monster Hunter World' or read a volume of the main manga. Then, when you dive into 'Grunge,' you'll feel the stark contrast in its setting: no organized guild, no friendly hub, just a desperate town on the brink. That contrast is where a lot of its narrative power comes from. It's less about where it fits and more about how it recontextualizes the familiar elements into something bleak and new.

Where does Monster Hunter International: Legion fit in the series order?

6 回答2026-08-03 18:40:48
It's number four. The humor is still there, but the horror elements get dialed up to eleven. The enemy in this one is particularly nasty, and the book's placement in the series allows for that shift because the readers are already acclimated to the world.

What is the chronological story order of the Monster Hunter series?

3 回答2026-08-03 09:41:03
The art books are key. They often contain developer notes about the intended timeline and connections between locales. For instance, it's suggested that the Jurassic Frontier in later games is what remains of the Forest and Hills from the very first game after years of ecological change. That's a subtle chronological thread you'd never get from gameplay alone.

What is the chronological reading order for all Monster Hunter books?

5 回答2026-08-03 11:45:31
It's an anthology universe. Like 'Black Mirror' or The Cthulhu Mythos stories by different authors. You wouldn't ask for the chronological order of all Cthulhu stories; you'd pick a writer you like. Do the same here—pick an artist or writer whose style appeals to you.
