If you want psychological suspense that really digs into the mess of a broken mind, try 'I’m Thinking of Ending Things'. That book messed me up for days. It’s less a conventional mystery and more a slow, surreal unraveling of reality during a car trip to meet a boyfriend's parents. The dread is so pervasive and existential. The 'suspense' isn't about a killer lurking outside, it's about the narrator's own thoughts becoming a hostile, untrustworthy place. The ending just sits with you, heavy and unresolved in the best possible way.

Gillian Flynn’s 'Sharp Objects' is another classic for a reason. The protagonist’s own self-harm rituals and toxic family history are just as compelling as the murder investigation she’s covering. The southern gothic setting adds this layer of decay that mirrors the psychological damage. You’re never sure if she’s solving the crime or being consumed by it.

Sometimes I think the whole 'psychological thriller' label gets slapped on anything with an unreliable narrator these days. But a book that really earned it for me was 'The Silent Patient'. It’s not just about the twist, which yeah, is solid, but the way it builds this suffocating atmosphere in the psychiatric unit. You’re stuck inside the therapist’s head as his professional certainty slowly crumbles, and the patient’s silence becomes this oppressive, tangible thing. It’s a masterful study in obsession and the stories we tell ourselves to stay sane.

For something more domestic but equally nerve-shredding, I’d point to 'Rock Paper Scissors' by Alice Feeney. A couple trapped in a remote chapel during a snowstorm, playing these annual letters that reveal layers of deceit. The psychology here is all about the tiny betrayals in a marriage that snowball into something monstrous. The setting does half the work, making you feel the cold and the isolation seeping into their already fractured relationship.

Don’t overlook older titles like 'The Collector' by John Fowles. It’s a dual-narrative from a obsessed, socially awkward man and the woman he kidnaps. The psychological tension comes from the chilling ordinariness of his delusion versus her desperate, intellectual struggle to survive. It’s a foundational text for the 'why-dunnit' and far more disturbing than any serial killer thriller because the monster’s psychology is so banal and believable. The suspense is absolutely agonizing.

What thriller books combine psychological suspense with crime mystery?

Jane Harper's 'The Dry' is an outstanding outback noir that blends a present-day crime with a past tragedy. The mystery is compelling, but the psychological suspense comes from the protagonist's return to a town that holds his own deep trauma and the collective guilt and secrets of the community. The harsh environment acts as a pressure cooker on everyone's psyches. You're solving two crimes while watching a man psychologically unravel in the place he fled.

I'm waiting for more recommendations that aren't just bestsellers. The hidden gems in this crossover are often the best. Anyone have a great indie or translated pick that flew under the radar?
