How Does Nolan’S Series Connect To Michael J. Sullivan’S Earlier Book Order?
As someone new to The Riyria Revelations, I'm mapping out how prequels like The Crown Tower fit with the original Royce and Hadrian timeline and story sequence.

Imagine two musicians. 'Revelations' is their acclaimed, complex symphony. 'Chronicles' are the early jam sessions and demos where they found their sound. You appreciate the symphony on its own, but hearing the raw sessions gives you a deeper appreciation for the artistry and the collaboration. The connection is in witnessing the creative process of this legendary partnership, note by note, before the final performance.

I see them as complementary tones. 'Chronicles' has a more episodic, mystery-of-the-week feel where the joy is in the execution of the plan. 'Revelations' is a sprawling epic where the joy is in uncovering a vast conspiracy. They connect by sharing the same brilliant protagonists who are suited to both types of story. If you love heists and tight plots, start with 'Chronicles.' If you love epic world-building and saving kingdoms, start with 'Revelations.' You can't go wrong.

It's funny, I read them in the 'wrong' order and don't regret it. The connection felt like getting a long, involved prequel movie after loving the original trilogy. You already know the ending, but you're thrilled to see how it all began. The tension in 'Chronicles' isn't about if they survive, but how they become the legends you already know. It's a different kind of suspense, one based on character formation rather than plot survival.

It's less of a direct narrative connection and more of an emotional echo chamber. Sullivan built this incredible duo in 'Revelations,' and the prequels let you spend more time in their company, seeing the moments that forged their bond. A throwaway joke in the main series might have its origin story detailed in a prequel chapter. The connection is for the fans who just couldn't get enough, a way to revisit a beloved dynamic from a new angle. It's fan service in the best possible sense—earned and deeply satisfying.

The throughline is loyalty. Every story in both series, at its heart, tests and reaffirms the bond between Royce and Hadrian. The prequels show them building it through fire. The original series shows them relying on it to save the world. That's the core connection. All the plot details about empires and magic are just the fantastic backdrop for that one central, unbreakable friendship. If you care about that dynamic, you'll enjoy both series regardless of order.

I never believed in second chances. Not until the man I gave everything to betrayed me.
I lost a million-dollar deal because I thought he’d been in a terrible accident. I rushed back, terrified—only to find out it was a lie. He was fine. He was home. Sleeping with my sister.
I drank that night. Too much. I almost got myself killed.
Instead, I met him.
Golden eyes. Too handsome. Too Elegant. He pulled me in and tore me down in the same breath. Every time I thought of him, I remembered his cruel words and cursed the asshole all over again.
Then I learned the truth.
He was the Lycan King.
“You called the Lycan King an asshole?” Jessie yelled.
“I didn’t know,” I groaned. “He was just a man in a white shirt with a really mean mouth.”
She went quiet. “Then why did he come back for you?”
Natalia was born to obey, raised as a bargaining chip to secure peace between packs. It was the way girls were raised in her family. And within powerful families, being an only child, her father was sure to make her know her place since her fate was sealed when he had arranged her marriage to the brutal Alpha of the Crimson Howl pack. But Natalia refuses to be anyone's pawn. She refused to obey, and most importantly, she refused to be controlled.
On the day of her wedding, dressed in white and suffocating in expectations, she runs.
By the edge of a forgotten river, she finds a stranger. A man with cold eyes and a darker soul, Alpha Nolan. He mocks her at first, calls her dramatic, tells her she’d drown ugly if she jumps. But beneath his sharp tongue lies a haunted alpha with no love, no mercy, and no reason to care… until now.
I was the girl no one noticed.
Until I opened File Case No. 0001.
Azrael Atlas St. Claire. They call him “The Architect.” A ghost. A cold-blooded killer. A man so dangerous the FBI can’t touch. His death would shatter the economy. Rival syndicates would burn the city to kill him. He has no weakness.
Then he found me.
He appeared in my archive and vanished without a trace. The next morning, gifts started appearing on my nightstand. First, a bullet coated in dried blood. Second, ten fingers belonging to the man who touched me.
He watched. Followed. Stalked my every move.
Then one night, he came through my window. He took what he wanted while I floated in haze. I woke up sore, terrified…and craving for more—needing for more.
The FBI saw a fracture in me, and decided to weaponize it. They wired me. Made me their spy with a promised I’d be safe if I helped them cage the monster.
Yet, at the first sign of blood, they ran. Leaved me in chaos.
He stayed.
Now, I lived in his world. My mother thinks the lawyer at her table is a kind stranger. She didn’t feel his hand between my thighs underneath. She doesn’t know he’s been sculpting my life for years, long before we ever met.
The FBI wants me to betray him. His enemies want me dead for revenge.
But the monster who stole my life?
He’s the only one who ever truly saw me.
And I’m starting to wonder if that makes me just as dangerous as him.
They say there’s a line between the victim and the villain.
I don’t think I’m on the right side anymore.
"There's only one thing that can make a simple art exhibition so tiring; Evelyn Bennett."

A dark, clinical neo-noir thriller, The Architect of the Shadows strips away the glamour of Hollywood to expose the brutal friction between digital consolidation and physical reality.
For decades, Silas Thorne Danielson—a ruthlessly brilliant logistics coordinator with a calculated detachment from human empathy—has operated an invisible shadow utility. Using non-networked legacy hardware and shell-company registries, he has quietly absorbed independent cinematic libraries, systematically dismantling the legacy of aging action star and stunt coordinator Sebastian Sorgentone to hide multi-million-dollar maritime assets.
But when an automated federal audit loop paralyzes Silas’s digital infrastructure, the conflict fractures out of the cloud and into the physical world. Trapped by a looming federal dragnet, Silas must head south to a lead-lined Cold War salt silo in Key Largo to retrieve the physical backup arrays that can reset his network. Waiting for him are Sebastian and his estranged brother Francis, mobilizing six tons of un-trackable military iron to drag the slick corporate architect into a landscape where digital logic fails, and only physical endurance and raw mass matter.
Meanwhile, across the country, Sebastian’s daughters navigate the wreckage of their family’s financial collapse, shifting from targets of the system to the pragmatic components that will ultimately help seal it shut. Grounded in a grim, industrial realism, the narrative explores the heavy price of family survival, the unyielding weight of memory, and the permanent closing of a system that tried to turn human blood into data entries.
The purest, most enjoyable experience is the publication order of the core Riyria books: 'The Riyria Revelations' ('Theft of Swords', etc.) first, THEN go back and read 'The Riyria Chronicles'. Those chronicle books are like delicious dessert—extra adventures with characters you already love. Reading them first would be like eating your cake before the main course; it's still sweet, but the meal's structure is off. Save the prequel treats for after you're fully invested in the duo.
The most direct familial connection is, of course, the lineage of rulers. Legends establishes the bloodlines that supposedly run through to the Riyria era, particularly around the heirship. The entire political conflict in Riyria revolves around a claim to a throne established in Legends.
But Sullivan is clever—he plays with the idea of lineage and legitimacy. The connection shows that bloodlines are messy and the 'true' heir might not be who you think, either in the past or the present. It links the series through a central question of leadership: is it born or made? The answer seems to change over the centuries, but the question remains the same for both Persephone and the potential heirs in Riyria.
