Can I Read Michael J. Sullivan’S Series In Publication Order Or Chronology?
Spoiler-free clarification for a new Riyria reader debating timeline choices. Which path preserved Sullivan's reveal intentions best, publication versus chronological? The series order feels important to the experience.
I tried chronological from 'Age of Myth' and it... didn't grab me. Put it down after a few chapters. Years later, a friend insisted I try 'Theft of Swords' and I was hooked immediately. The pacing and tone of the original series is just more engaging as an entry point. The ancient stuff feels weightier, more mythic. Coming back to 'Age of Myth' AFTER loving Riyria was fantastic because I was hunting for lore connections. As a starting point, it was a slog. Your mileage may vary, but that was my experience.

My personal order was weird. I read 'The Riyria Revelations', then the 'Chronicles' prequels, then stopped. I tried 'Age of Myth' but it felt too disconnected at the time. Later, when 'The Rise and Fall' series started coming out, I went back and did a full chronological read from 'Age of Myth' straight through to the end of 'Riyria Revelations' again. It was a HUGE undertaking, but seeing the full circle was incredible. I wouldn't recommend it for a first read, but for a re-read? Absolutely mind-blowing.

It depends on your tolerance for lore. If you're the type who reads the Silmarillion before 'The Hobbit', then go chronological. If the Silmarillion sounds like homework, start with 'Theft of Swords'. It's really that simple. Sullivan's later series are fantastic, but they have a denser, more political, ensemble-cast feel compared to the tight, character-driven focus of the original Riyria duo. One is a gateway; the other is the deep end of the pool.

The purest, most enjoyable experience is the publication order of the core Riyria books: 'The Riyria Revelations' ('Theft of Swords', etc.) first, THEN go back and read 'The Riyria Chronicles'. Those chronicle books are like delicious dessert—extra adventures with characters you already love. Reading them first would be like eating your cake before the main course; it's still sweet, but the meal's structure is off. Save the prequel treats for after you're fully invested in the duo.

Honestly? I read 'The Riyria Chronicles' first by accident because I picked up 'The Crown Tower' thinking it was the first book. I loved it! Meeting Royce and Hadrian at the start of their partnership was great. Then when I moved to 'Revelations', it was like catching up with old friends years later. Seeing how their relationship had evolved into this seamless, legendary partnership was its own reward. So while it might not be the intended order, it worked perfectly fine. Sometimes happy accidents happen. Don't stress too much about getting the order 'perfect.' The characters and writing are strong enough to shine regardless of where you start.
You might just find your own unique path through it.
I find the publication order more comforting. You meet the most beloved characters first. Royce and Hadrian are your gateway into this world. When you later read about the ancient heroes they occasionally mention, it feels like uncovering treasured family history. Starting with the ancient history feels more distant, less personal.
The throughline is loyalty. Every story in both series, at its heart, tests and reaffirms the bond between Royce and Hadrian. The prequels show them building it through fire. The original series shows them relying on it to save the world. That's the core connection. All the plot details about empires and magic are just the fantastic backdrop for that one central, unbreakable friendship. If you care about that dynamic, you'll enjoy both series regardless of order.
They fit as evidence of author-reader synergy. Sullivan wrote the Riyria Revelations as a complete tale. Reader demand for more Royce and Hadrian led to the Chronicles. That's why they feel so lovingly crafted—they're born from genuine affection for the characters, both from the author and the fans. In the reading order, they represent the 'extra content' that exists because the core story was so good it left people wanting more. That's a pretty great place to fit.
It’s interesting how the ‘right’ order has become a fandom rite of passage. Everyone has a strong opinion, but it all comes from a place of love for the series. That’s a good sign for any new reader.
What's the rush to know the whole timeline? Savor it. Read 'Revelations' and fall in love with the world. Then, when you crave more, you have two whole other series to dive into that expand the history in thrilling ways. Knowing the entire chronology upfront is like reading a spoiler wiki before watching a show. Half the fun is the discovery.
