What's the general consensus on 'Next'? I thought it was a messy, fragmented take on gene patenting, jumping between too many storylines. It's interesting thematically, but not his tightest plot. I'd read that one last, after you're already a committed fan and are curious about his final thoughts on biotechnology. Starting with it might give you a skewed view of his narrative prowess.

I have no strong feelings on the order. I just like talking about these books. They were such a huge part of my teenage reading. The feeling of staying up late, flashlight under the covers, terrified of a fictional virus or dinosaur or swarm. That's the real takeaway—the feeling. The order you read them in doesn't change that core memory of thrilling, smart escapism.

Think about the technology fear at the core. 'Andromeda' is fear of the unknown microscopic alien. 'Terminal Man' is fear of the computer in the human brain. 'Jurassic Park' is fear of revived primordial life. 'Prey' is fear of distributed, self-replicating tech. Reading them in that order shows a shift from external threats to threats that are increasingly integrated into our bodies and environment. It's a profound philosophical journey disguised as pop fiction.

Reading them all in a row might expose some repetitive character archetypes—the brilliant, obsessed scientist; the cynical journalist; the corporate villain. If that bothers you, space them out with other authors. Don't feel compelled to marathon them. Treat each as a standalone movie. That way, the familiar beats feel comforting rather than repetitive. Maybe one Crichton between every two or three other books.

Library availability might dictate your order more than any ideal list. That's how I did it. Got 'The Lost World' first because 'Jurassic Park' was checked out. It was confusing but fine. The point is to read them, not to optimize the experience. Any order gets you there. The community sometimes overcomplicates this.

Which Michael Crichton books should I read first in publication order?

Man, I miss new Crichton books. That's all. Reading this thread makes me want to do a full re-read. Maybe in order this time. I usually just re-read 'JP' and 'Timeline' every few years. There's a comfort in them, even though they're about disaster. Weird, huh?

Where should I start reading Michael Crichton books?

Honestly, just google a list of his novels and point blindly. They're all pretty much bangers from the late 60s through the early 2000s. The only ones I'd maybe caution against as a first read are the posthumously published ones ('Pirate Latitudes,' 'Dragon Teeth') because they weren't fully polished by him, or 'The Lost World' because it's a sequel. Otherwise, it's a target-rich environment. You can't lose.
