You can romance Karlach as a Dark Urge in Baldur’s Gate 3, and it adds a lot of complication to her personal story. The story follows her to find a cure for her disease, and she is a good person in a bad place, so it conflicts quite strongly with the Dark Urge’s natural urge to do violent things. It makes for a very interesting and complex arc of story though. The connection between a chaotic force and a stabilizing influence is very familiar to me, as it was at the center of ‘Allure Of Darkness’ (a Bard story), a cursed noble’s heir bound to a paladin who is sworn to destroy the heir’s corrupted self. Their tortured interaction is always high-stakes and character-driven, with the threat of the Dark Urge breaking at any time and allowing his base nature to run amok.

Romancing Karlach as the Dark Urge in 'Baldur's Gate 3' was one of the most fun experiences I have had in gaming. The Dark Urge’s drive towards violence mixed with Karlach’s passionate nature created a fantastic tug of war between good and evil. Karlach is not a one dimensional love interest, she is fully developed and has her own hangups and desires. The game allows her to react naturally to your Dark Urge fueled actions whether you are trying to give in or fight it.
A particularly standout moment in her romance was when I confessed to having succumbed to the Dark Urge to bloodlust and she challenged me on it, reacting authentically to my words. As I tried for redemption she provided the perfect motivation for my character, but if I chose the Urge then our romance took on a much darker and more somber tone. Each choice feeling completely written for the situation.
What I enjoy most is that Karlach’s romance is well embedded in the story with lots of unique dialogues and scenes and it can be moved to deep and emotional levels regardless of the players’ choices. This is also important because, as I’ve said previously, this game has some of the most unique and complex moral choices in gaming and it’s a testament to Larian’s ability to craft a story around these player choices to create meaningful and emotional romances regardless of how repented or ruthless a player is during their playthroughs.

So I’m playing ‘Baldur’s Gate 3’ right now. One of the most fascinating aspects of the game are the romance options. As the Dark Urge, I confirmed with several people that you can indeed romance Karlach, the fiery half-orc. Her storyline as a main character really adds a new layer to interactions with other romantic interests, and most of them are really intense. The way her passion and depth intersect with the urdish side of the Dark Urge is really complex and so Karlach’s personality clashes with and mesh with the darker aspects of the urdish side in really interesting ways. There’s definitely a lot of potential for a redemption story with Karlach, but her warmth and loyalty really shines through in all of her interactions with the PC. It’s really emotional and I feel like the game really nails Karlach’s romance regardless of the darker background of the Dark Urge. It really shows that Larian is capable of writing this sort of twisted but deep relationship.

Just to confirm, the Dark Urge romancing Karlach is totally doable and quite wonderful. She is a complete contrast to the Dark Urge as she is very much the opposite end of the spectrum, being very much the light in all of her own darkness, open and emotional and very protective of her friends and loved ones. She scolds the player for going violent, but is always happy to connect with them in all of the best ways too.

Really what it comes down to is, what’s the story you want to tell? Is it a monster learning to love? Then Karlach is a great test for that and will reward that sort of story. She’s got a huge capacity for forgiveness and for feeling joy. But on the other hand, is your story a monster pretending to be a hero until they can reveal their true nature? Then courting her is the ultimate setup for a heart-wrenching betrayal. Both are compelling stories in their own right, and the game is more easily set up to support the first, but a good roleplayer can definitely tell the second for a really, really sad story.

A lot of people have commented on this before, and generally it works for a ‘redeemed’ or resistant Durge, but not so much for an ‘embrace’ Durge (since Halsin gained approval of the hero Durge through heroic actions, it would be somewhat difficult to maintain a high approval rating as a monster). But that would be some fun metagaming, in order to do good things in front of Halsin and evil things when he isn’t around. Of course, all of this would depend on good roleplaying of the Urge that you’re hiding, and of your hidden duplicity from your lover. Some really dark and complex roleplaying could be created here, and while there may not be specific written content for it, the scenario you create could be extremely rich.

The polyamory option is very specific and needs to be completed in a very specific order, mostly following the drow twins in Act 3. It’s possible that the best class for your Dark Urge is also the best race for that class. A good Monk is a Wood Elf or Wood Half-Elf, for example, because their racial abilities boost Dexterity and Wisdom. For a Paladin, Strength and Charisma are key, so Zariel Tiefling, Half-Elf, or Human would all be good choices. A pure Wizard is all about Intelligence, with a secondary focus on survival, so High Elf (for the cantrip) or Shield Dwarf (for armor) would be excellent choices. Building a powerful character is easier when you start with the class fantasy for your Dark Urge and then choose a race to support its primary and secondary ability scores, and to give it some useful ribbons. This is a much more efficient way to build a character than starting with a race and then trying to fit a class to it.

For a more complete experience, remember the sound. There are various music mods which add songs to certain scenes. Some mods add ambient camp dialogue as well. For example, a soft romantic song for Natasha in her Act 2 scene could greatly change the feel of that scene instead of using the regular camp music. There are also small voice barks (none too long or out of place) added for combat and exploration alike, which make her feel even more present in the story. These various mods enhance the atmosphere of the existing story and are meant to complete the world in which the romance story takes place, rather than replacing the core of the story with an alternate version of events. And sometimes mood equals words.

Trying to make Minthara work on a good-aligned run is sort of mentally strenuous to attempt. Minthara isn’t cute, Minthara isn’t lenient towards good creatures - she is drow, and an exceptionally brutal one at that. As described in her write-up, she completely masterminded the mass-kill of a tiefling refugee camp. You had to side with the goblin camp to bring her to your party, helping to orchestrate said slaughter.
Trying to justify it to access the romance content would feel like stretching to an extreme to alter one’s character in order to gain access to Minthara’s unique romance story. It could be headcanoned that Minthara is slowly redeemed from her evil ways later on in the story, but the act that kickstarts the romance is so evil and repulsive that it would taint the entire rest of the playthrough. Instead, it would serve as a narrative paradox that the player would have to ignore in order to gain access to the content that they desire.

Note that this does not modify your save game in any way; it simply loads in a different story module for you to play through. No. That would ruin a lot of great things about the fandom, in my opinion. Every morally ambiguous character needs to be romanced by every protagonist in the story. It's better that way. And there's nothing that says every intense relationship has to end in a kiss. The intense history between Wyll and Mizora is deeply toxic. All of the bitterness and twisted intimacy of their deal is what makes their situation so compelling. Turning it all into a romance would somehow ‘fix’ it all and ruin it.
This would also miss the point of a deep, complex, story driven relationship in the game. The relationship with the cambion focusses on a deep story about obligation, regret and reclaiming one’s soul. Turning her into a romanceable character would turn this in to just another villain-banging simulator. It would also clash greatly with the heroic profile of the Blade of Frontiers, Wyll. Can you imagine the hero of the story settling down with a cambion who gets off on the suffering of others? The doors that are not meant to be opened should not be opened. There are plenty of other complex relationships in the game that could be just as interesting, just in different ways.
