Of the characters I sort of vibe with, Grumpy is probably my favorite. Even though he looks all grumpy all the time, there’s something really funny about his grumbling and his ‘honesty’. Even in the instances where Grumpy is helping Snow White, he mutters about how women should be washing dishes. Also, Grumpy is sort of the reluctant caretaker to Snow White and the 7 dwarfs and I find that really relatable.

Grumpy is relatable on days where we don’t feel like singing and he embody’s that feeling beautifully. I also really appreciate the chemistry he has with Dopey, constantly annoyed but never mean and I think their relationship is some of the best in the movie. He’s not a grumpy old man trope, Grumpy is a mood.

The blushing is just so adorable. The way Bashful hides behind his beard when Snow White speaks to him is just so “mood” for anyone who has ever been shy. His quiet nature makes his rare courageous acts all the more powerful, such as saving Snow White’s life.

It was also wonderful how Bashful was good natured and the other little men would tease him as if he were part of their found family. Bashful proves you don’t have to be loud to be loved. Every time he poked his head out of his hat I just wanted to give him a big hug!

Dopey is my favorite of the 7 dwarfs. I don’t know what it is about him but he is so endearing in his silence and his clumsiness. He is just the center of the group even though he never speaks. I love how he walks around in his big shoes and has that lovestruck look on his face. He is just so loyal to Snow White and that makes him so cute too. He isn’t the smartest but he just has so much joy in him that it makes everyone else happy.

It’s also really sweet how all of the other dwarfs take care of Dopey. I especially love Grumpy. I know he seems mean most of the time, but I’m pretty sure that he loves Dopey. Dopey is the underdog and I love him so much! You don’t even have to be able to speak to be lovable, and that’s really beautiful. Every time I watch Snow White, I find myself rooting for Dopey even more.

I also think we need more of Happy’s energy in the world. His round belly laughs and constant grin can produce instant serotonin which is why I chose Happy. In the darkest of moments (the evil queen, the poisoned apple etc) Happy is the only one who manages to keep everyone’s spirits up. He finds joy in the smallest of things, whether it be a good meal or a silly dance.

I love Happy because his optimisim is not silly. It is true to face hard times and to keep others from totally losing it in the worst situations. Plus, his appearance is SOOO cute. I love his rosy cheeks. I think he would be the group’s unofficial hype man and every group needs that kind of person.

You are Sleepy! I mean who wouldn’t want to be that man. All his actions show up as droopy eyes and huge yawns. On really busy weeks I find myself wanting to be more like him, my spirit animal. Sleeping during songs is even impressive to me. He is definitely the dwarf I would want at a sleepover. Bring on the chaos, Sleepy is so very unaffected by it all.

He manages to mine and march and fight off the poor little lost souls who ate the witch’s poison apple while still being sleeping all the time. This guy is pretty cool. I think Sleepy would be the best dwarf to have at a sleepover because even though he’s sleepy all the time, he’s pretty comically unconscious. Sleepy is just so cool because he proves that being tired all the time is a valid personality trait.

I'm kinda meh about this movie. On one hand, it was super poetic and concluded beautifully. On the other hand, the Monique-dad twist felt super forced and was almost like a soap opera twist on an otherwise amazing character study. The leader of the group of dwarves at the beginning is very brave, principled and loyal to his friends. However, once the group of dwarves have reclaimed Erebor and there is so much treasure there, all of Thorin’s flaws are magnified. The gold does not change him to worse, but it does bring out the worst in him. There is a great scene where Thorin walks through a lot of gold and he trails his fingers through it like it is a lover. Smaug is a hoarder as well and he is malice personified, but Thorin’s downfall is so much more tragic because it is human. When Thorin dies his last words are of regret for having wasted his second chance for friendship.
