How Many Pages Are In The Hobbit By Tolkien?

I should note that Ellis’ work is not typically sold by the page count of the standard edition. I’m referring to the mass market paperback, which comes in around 300 pages or so. This is very standard for a great deal of classic fantasy, a very compact and very dense read. For another example of how classic tales can be considerably expanded into long, dark, and very complex novel-length stories with a great deal of fully-developed political intrigue and complex character motivations, see ‘Classic Faery Tales Rewritten For Adults Only’.

Note: The version of The Hobbit that I have is an average-sized paperback book (of roughly 3 inches or so), which is about 310 or so pages long. In contrast, my friend’s hardcover version of the book (which is from many years before this paperback edition) was about 300 pages long or so — but printed in much larger font, I guess. In addition to size of printed letters, other things that a publisher of a book such as this could vary are number of diagrams, amount of description of artwork, etc. Sometimes there are even reproductions of the author’s sketches. So the page count of this sort of book could easily vary by dozens of pages one way or the other.
Despite being a “short” book for epic fantasy, The Hobbit has packed a massive amount of adventure into its pages, and the way that Tolkien managed to tell this story and make it feel so complete in so few pages is admirable. The trolls alone are worth the price of admission, and Smaug’s lair is equally as impressive. The whole book is impressive really. In contrast to this, The Lord of the Rings is so much longer and yet it doesn’t have the same level of focus that this book does.

My very worn school copy of “The Hobbit” (with the green dragon on the cover) lists 320 pages at the end of the book. School editions by Scholastic are often slightly re-organized to fit the classroom in their versions as well as ebook versions reflowing to fit whatever screen they’re viewing on. I have learned not to trust page counts too much. Meanwhile, the book itself is incredibly light reading. So unlike huge, sprawling, doorstop-like fantasies that take ages to read, “The Hobbit” is an easily PASSED by-for comfort read that I like to return to again and again, and it feels to me to go on and on forever (in the very best way) from Bag End to the Lonely Mountain.

I just reorganized my books on their shelves and noticed again how skinny The Hobbit is compared to other fantasy novels. My copy of The Hobbit is a 2012 HarperCollins edition and it has 368 pages including several maps and appendices. There are kids’ editions with even larger print that run to 400 pages or so, and then there are these little pocket editions that cram the whole book in under 300 pages. But The Hobbit’s page count doesn’t really give you a sense of the density of the book. Even a single chapter is like an entire novel in itself. I think of “Riddles in the Dark” as an epic in its own right.
It’s actually quite funny because when I re-read The Hobbit last year, I tried to count the number of pages but got distracted by the Songs for the Dwarves. In retrospect, they are sort of extraneous but so beautiful and add to the charm of the novel. It must have been very painful for Tolkien to cut them out for brevity.

I am a tutor for middle school English, and we use The Hobbit (ISBN 978-0547928227, 300 even pages) in our studies. To set up a lesson plan for this, The Hobbit averages 15-16 pages per chapter. This makes for a very do-able reading of a chapter a night for students. The page count is a teacher’s nightmare, but the chapters are of consistent length and the book is very episodically structured, making it a teacher’s dream.

For me, I never actually finished the book. I tried to read it three times but every time I got stuck around page 300 when all the main characters become adults. I have problems with the change in tone and the way the book shifts from child’s play to marriage plots of various European characters. To me, the book that I loved is only around 300 pages or so of fabulous childhood adventures, eccentric relatives, screwed up adults and numerous clever plot twists and turns. As for the rest of the book, I’ll admit that I’m in the minority and that most people finish the book and in fact love the majority of it. However, for me, I just don’t have the energy to keep reading and I leave it at 300 pages or so. Maybe one day I’ll go back to it, but for now, the reputation of the book is just too much and it makes me feel like I HAVE to read the whole thing, which is just not worth it. Just read the parts of the book that you enjoy and don’t worry about the rest. Life is too short!

I prefer editions of The Hobbit that include Tolkien’s own artwork. He wasn’t an artist, and his drawings are not nearly as good as those of a professional illustrator. But there is something raw and map-like about his drawings of Bag End or Smaug that perfectly conveys the sense of another world which he created. These should not be small, black-and-white illustrations inserted into the text. Rather, they should be full-page drawings – sometimes in color – a wonderful part of the book as it was written. The best editions of The Hobbit include all of Tolkien’s sketches and paintings as they were. These are not illustrations added to a published story. Rather, they are part of a recovered artifact from the Middle-earth story itself. There is a huge difference in atmosphere between a published book and a notebook.

I’ve seen many beautiful hand-lettered versions of this book as well as many examples of altered books where the artist uses the pages of the book as a canvas. Because this book is so short, it’s easy to illustrate and annotate, and it would make a great project for a book binding class or to make as a personal project. Beyond reading this book, it’s also a lot of fun to play with as text. Yes, you could copy this out by hand, but it would not take years to do. This is a unique way to interact with a classic.

I get to count front matter and back matter, right? So that means the copyright page and the dedication and the table of contents and the author's note and the preview of the next book all count as well. That's another 20 pages or so of non-story. An ebook lists all locations of a book, so a book of 350 locations is 350 'pages' of story. But in reality, that only translates to 320 pages of actual written story, not 350. This is one of my bugaboos when judging a book by its length. I have to flip to the start of Chapter 1 and the end of the book's last Chapter to get a true story length. Some publishers are better than others at counting up the actual number of story pages in a book of a given page length. For example, a 380-page hardcover might only contain 350 pages of written story. It's a small difference, but one that matters to the truly page-count-conscious.

As for page count, honestly I never cared to look. There were too many exciting moments for me, like the scene at Heorot, the swimming competition with Breca, and the harsh journey to the mere. It felt endless but at the same time instant, like I was right there in the moment. It didn’t feel like I was reading a document, instead I was sitting in a mead hall listening to a scop tell stories of old. The PDF (that I read on my old e-ink reader) was just a vessel to carry the story. A great translation is one that makes you forget that you are reading a document, and you are transported to another world.
