They Hid Me Beyond Manhattan's Lights

They Hid Me Beyond Manhattan's Lights

The three heirs of the Whitman family all claimed to love me. But their way of loving me was to keep me hidden. Alexander said New York's financial reporters were too aggressive and that making our relationship public would only put me in the middle of a media frenzy. Nicholas said people in the investment world were vicious gossips and he was afraid I'd become a target, so he never brought me to his partners' gatherings, private clubs, or holiday receptions. Leon said his music career wasn't established yet. Once he had a stage that was truly his own, he would acknowledge me in front of the whole world. I waited four years. This changed when Lillian Grant walked into their lives. Alexander walked her down the red carpet at the Manhattan Art Foundation gala. The next day, every entertainment outlet ran the same headline: "Eldest Whitman Heir Appears to Go Public with New Romance." Nicholas brought her to an investor reception, where his partners called her "the future Mrs. Whitman" right to my face. Leon was the most direct. He played a song at a twenty-thousand-person concert and told the livestream camera, "For the most important person in my life." The jumbotron cut to Lillian's seat. The day after the livestream. Alexander set a folder on the coffee table. "You're twenty-five now. We think it's time you had a life of your own." Nicholas continued, "This man comes from an ordinary background, but he has a stable job. He's been divorced once and has no children. " Leon slid the photo in front of me, smiling with the same easy warmth as always. "We've already met him for you. He's more than a good match." I didn't argue. I just picked up my phone and called the Whitman family attorney. What they didn't know was that the family trust Grandfather had established before his death made one thing perfectly clear. Whoever I chose would receive that twenty-seven percent block of voting shares and become the true power behind the Whitman family.

THE RUTHLESS BILLIONAIRE'S BRIDE

THE RUTHLESS BILLIONAIRE'S BRIDE

“Hmm.” Luca lowered himself, his groin making contact with mine. He brought his nose to my hair and sniffed, letting out an appreciative moan. “Roses. I like it.” “Luca…” his name came out as a moan when he nibbled my ear. “Don't hurt Matt, please.” He looked at me with an indescribable look. “And what are you willing to give me in return for sparing your lover's life?” I gaped at him in surprise. He knew? That Matt was my ex boyfriend? “How did you…” He shook his head with a humorless laugh. “You wound me, honey. I know a lot of things. I just choose not to say it.” “I haven't threatened to kill you in your sleep, have I?” I asked, then let out a defeated sigh when he raised a brow in disbelief at me. “Fine. What do you want in return?” He stared down at me for one… two… five seconds and then said, “I'd like to watch you come undone. With my tongue.” ********** Born into a family of generational tradition, Ariadne has a duty to uphold. She has been engaged to part of the society's son Santiago Russo since birth. How does New York by Edward Rutherfurd blend history and fiction?

12 回答2026-08-05 05:20:45
I listened to the audiobook on my commute over a month. It was perfect for that. Each chapter is a self-contained era, so you can digest it in chunks. The blend made the commutes fly by—one day I'm in colonial New York, the next I'm in the Civil War draft riots. It turned history into entertainment, which is exactly what good historical fiction should do. The fictional stories gave me something to care about, and the historical details gave those stories weight and context. By the end, I felt like I'd taken a comprehensive course in New York history, but without any of the dryness of a textbook. It was a story first, a lesson second.

Which real New York events are central in Edward Rutherfurd’s novel?

16 回答2026-08-05 15:45:31
I read it as a companion to non-fiction NYC histories, and it's brilliant for that. The central events act as chronological signposts. You get the Dutch era, then the English takeover. The Revolutionary War occupation is a huge set-piece. The early 1800s focus on commerce (Erie Canal) and culture (Astor Place Riot). The mid-1800s are dominated by social strife, climaxing in the Draft Riots. The late 1800s cover the physical transformation (Bridge, Central Park) and political transformation (Tammany, Consolidation). It's a fictionalized narrative glued together by these well-chosen historical pillars. You remember the events because you remember what the fictional Master family was doing during them.

How accurate is Edward Rutherfurd’s depiction of New York’s past in the novel?

16 回答2026-08-05 15:49:17
The sheer logistics of keeping the history coherent across 800+ pages is a triumph. The family trees alone are a feat. While a specialist in any one era could find minor anachronisms or simplifications, the overall architecture is sound. He uses the fictional families to embody persistent New York archetypes: the shrewd trader, the striving immigrant, the old-money patrician, the artistic soul. These archetypes interacting with real history creates a compelling, if stylized, truth. It's accurate in the way a great historical painting is accurate—the details serve a larger, dramatic composition.

What time periods does Edward Rutherfurd cover in New York?

13 回答2026-08-05 17:19:01
Not gonna lie, I skipped some of the very early chapters. The tree and the glacier and whatever. I was here for the gangsters and the Gilded Age. But I appreciate that he set the stage from absolute zero. The main historical periods people talk about are there: Dutch rule, British era, Revolution, Founding Fathers period, Civil War turmoil, Ellis Island influx, Roaring Twenties, Great Depression, WWII, post-war changes, 70s grit, 80s Wall Street, and the post-9/21st century. It's all in there, woven through the lives of a few core families.
