For a slightly different take on the same type of dangerous romance, I have recently read ‘Owned by the Mafia Twins’. This book starts with the heroine being sold to settle a debt and then explores the tense power imbalance and forced proximity from the very start, making the heroes’ eventual emotional shifts all the more satisfying.

Happiness is a loaded gun. Our twin characters managed to get love and continue to run their empire. That is all. It seems fair in the end, as there are many avenged wrongs and bonds mended to the story, and in the end a very large question is left open. Are they finally free, or are they just better at hiding their chains? The love story develops fine, the stain of the mafia however does not come off. In the end a triumph that leaves you breathless, but not relaxed.

It was satisfying to see all of the threats to the twins’ be resolved, largely through clever alliances and hard determination. While there were some loose ends that were tied up satisfactorily, there were a few that were left somewhat open to interpretation. A book like this is perfect for fans of gritty romance, as it’s not a perfect and sugary sweet ending, but a realistic one for the characters in the story.

That is a very loaded question for this book. I finished it last week, and it’s still lingering in my head and evoking very mixed feelings in me. Does it have a ‘happy ending’? Well, that depends so much on how one defines a ‘happy ending.’ In this case, the main characters do in fact survive and find each other in the end. But is that in any way a happy ending, in the sense of a sunshine-and-rainbows ending of all conflicts resolved? Hell no. The ending is more of a tenuous truce, the feeling being that these people have managed to cling to their happiness in the most precarious of circumstances, with the knowledge that the darkest corners of their past could reappear at any moment to drag them back down into the depths. And as for the larger world of mafia politics that they’re a part of, all that is left unresolved and even more menacing than before. So, yeah, a happy-for-now type of ending. And one that has been hard-won in the most brutal of ways. If you’re the type of reader who requires complete closure for all of your characters and needs them to be safely tucked away in their own little island of bliss, then you’ll likely be very unhappy with this book. But if you’re the type of reader who can appreciate an ending where love has, in the end, somehow managed to win a brutal and unfair battle even if the war is by no means over yet, then you’ll likely find this to be a very satisfying, if decidedly bittersweet, read.

What I really want to know when I start a story is does it have a happy ending? Well, that isn’t really the right question to ask either. A better question would be does the ending of a story feel true to the story and the characters in it. For me, the answer is yes. All of the characters acted consistently with their established personalities and with their established motivations throughout the story. So whatever the ending is, it feels true to them and so it feels true to me. The world of the story is a real place, and even though the ending is not necessarily happy, it is satisfying. In the end, it is a hard-won, guarded happiness, but it is happy nonetheless. I would say that this story is for people who are more interested in a well-developed and realistic story than in a lot of wish-fulfillment.

I’m still trying to process how I feel, but for me, it wasn’t entirely happy. It felt more like exhausted relief. The characters had been so emotionally and physically battered by the end of the story that the fact that they were alive and could choose each other to be with was in itself a massive victory. The happiness felt quiet, tired, and even haunted in places. There was no grand celebration, just two people in a room, able to breathe and be themselves without fear of attack every second. The epilogue showed us how they built a life together, but of course, there were ghosts in every corner. It was a healing ending, not a triumphant one. The only ‘happy’ part was the potential for peace in the future, not a present moment of pure joy. To me, this was far more realistic and even moved me more than a simple ‘happily ever after’ would have. It was satisfying in a deeply complex and realistic way.

It is a happy ending, but not the kind of book that will leave you feeling happy or even euphoric. Rather, you will feel drained, and most of all, thoughtful. The happiness that you will feel for the main characters of the book is overshadowed by the suffering that they went through. You will feel happy for them, but also aware of the cost that they paid to get to that point. And the happiness is contemplative, not superficial. After I finished reading the book, I returned to the page where I had placed my bookmark, closed the book, and then went and stared at a wall for twenty minutes or so while I re-played scenes from the book in my head. It was not a grinning-from-ear-to-ear kind of book. But that is not to say that it was not a good book. I thought that it was a very good book indeed – a compelling and highly emotional read that delivered a complex sense of resolution at the end with only a glimmer of hope. If you’re looking for a feel-good book that has an unproblematic ending that will leave you feeling good long after you’ve finished reading, then this is not the book for you. But if you’re after a rich and thought-provoking read, then I can highly recommend it.

I listened to an author podcast talk about this book. She basically said from the start that she was going for an “earned but uneasy” resolution. A victory with scars. That kind of reading experience—of being in the middle of alternating between feelings of “yeah” and “no”—was kind of her goal. So, even though I didn’t entirely love the ending of this book, knowing that it was her intention all along and that it wasn’t some kind of failure to deliver a satisfying conclusion to the world she created that she’d spent the entire book building up was really important to me. What she’s gone for is a state of ambiguous happiness that will linger with you long after you’ve finished the book and will probably even provoke you from time to time. What I mean is that the happy ending is not a simple one. It’s a complicated mix of feelings, and the memory of cost and suffering that went before it has to be there too. So, if you finish this book feeling slightly disturbed, then that’s the author’s intention too. Not nice, I know. But better than the other way round.

This would likely feel unsatisfying to readers who are used to every single subplot getting wrapped up in a bow. But instead, the ending is strategically ambiguous, leaving room for a sequel or spin-off. There are several rival factions that were weakened but not destroyed. The ‘losing’ twin has a clear and somewhat fraught path ahead of him. And the female lead’s family situation has been left somewhat unresolved. So, happy ending for the love story. But, not necessarily a happy ending for the rest of the characters and plotlines. Which is probably the intent. If you are the type of reader who needs every single thing tied up in a bow, then you might find this ending to be somewhat unsatisfying. But, if you are the type of reader who loves a large, interconnected series, then this is the perfect ending to leave you hungry for more.
