A great plot twist is heavily reliant on the fore-telling prior to the actual event, and this does a great job of that. The Don got a scar on his left hand early on, and then briefly saw a character in the crowd with a similar scar in a market place. We assume it was some kind of error with the animation at the time. But no, that was the twin brother of the Don. We don’t get to see him fight till later, when the Don is attacked by a group of rivals, and this mysterious fighter is mirroring the Don’s every move in terms of muscle memory and fighting style. It’s really quite frightening the way he copies him.

The twin’s existence is fascinating to consider as it totally re-frames the rest of the story. All of the Don’s paranoia about being betrayed makes sense now. But it’s also unclear whether the twin is out to protect the Don or replace him. The movie keeps you guessing until the very end where the Don and the twin fight in the Don’s childhood home. There a torn family photo of the twin and the Don as kids sits on a table. “I waited 30 years for you to notice me,” the twin says in a quietly chilling line.

It’s a really fresh take on the secret twin brother/sister story. Instead of it being a long-lost sibling, it’s the Don’s estranged childhood friend Marco who everyone thought had died in a fire years ago. He was actually saved by a rival family and raised as their own, their hitman. The Don has been hunting his own twin brother without knowing it. Throughout the book there are little tells that the two brothers share – like how they always crack their knuckles before violence, or how they both like to put lemon peel in their drinks. The climax of the book is when Marco finally reveals the truth to the Don in a truce meeting between the two families. The Don is startled when Marco pulls off his gloves to reveal identical burn scars on both of their hands. But what’s most amazing about this reveal is that Marco had no idea either that he had a twin brother. He thought the Don was just another target for him to take out. The tension between the two of them as they lock eyes for the first time in years is palpable and absolute silence fills the air as they stare at each other in shock and tremble in their hands. It was a really amazing read and makes you go back to read previous chapters between the two of them and realize all the little tells that they shared.

A good secret twin twist is always fun. Here’s a twist where a high-powered mafia don has a secret twin brother. The twin brother is an unassuming bartender at the don’s favorite hidden bar. We find out the twin brother’s identity when he mixes the don a special cocktail, and in passing mentions a family heirloom phrase to the don in a tense negotiation. The tension in the room is palpable as the don is shocked by the revelation. The writer of the story does a great job of conveying the duality of the two brothers. The don is portrayed as a ruthless and powerful mafia don, while his twin is portrayed as quiet and observant.

It was also really effective in terms of drama and confrontation. He’s been searching for years for the illegitimate son of his father and what he finds is a mirror image of himself. But someone with none of the power and none of the weight of his circumstances. So it’s not really a confrontation. It’s more of a silent, eerily quiet realization of who this person is. And then the rest of the story explores the dynamic of this twin who has a completely different moral compass than the Don and yet is also his opposite in that he has no sense of responsibility to anyone. He’s been secretly undermining the Don’s work and the writer does a great job of conveying the Don’s growing awareness of this and the tension that builds between them as the Don tries to figure out what’s going on.
