For a dose of forensic artistry, the 'Rizzoli & Isles' series by Tess Gerritsen is a great procedural duo follow. While it focuses on detective Jane Rizzoli and medical examiner Maura Isles, Rizzoli is the central detective figure. The thrillers are graphic and medical, but the core is the evolving friendship between the tough, working-class Rizzoli and the refined, intellectual Isles. Following their professional and personal lives, with all the clashes and loyalties, provides a solid backbone through some very dark and twisty cases.

I'm always surprised how few people bring up Philip Kerr's Bernie Gunther series. A detective in Berlin during the rise of the Nazis, through WWII, and into the Cold War. Each book is a hard-boiled case, but they're all set against the backdrop of immense historical events.
The interconnection comes from Bernie's life being swept up in history; a decision he makes in 1936 will have consequences in 1947. It's less about case A directly leading to case B, and more about one man's continuous struggle for integrity in a world that keeps trying to corrupt him. The cases are thrilling, but the real punch is the historical and moral complexity. Brilliant, bleak stuff.

Can we talk about how some of these series lose steam after 20+ books? It's a real testament to an author to keep a character fresh for that long. Sometimes I think a tight trilogy or a five-book arc is more satisfying than an endless run. The pressure to keep producing annual installments can dilute what made the character special in the first place. Just a thought.

Laurie R. King's Mary Russell series is a brilliant, feminist take on Sherlock Holmes. Russell is a young woman who becomes the apprentice and later partner/wife of an aging Sherlock Holmes. They travel the world solving mysteries together. You follow Russell's growth from a precocious teen into a master detective in her own right, and her dynamic with Holmes is wonderfully reimagined. It's a delightful long-term follow for two detectives, with each book exploring a new location and historical moment post-WWI.

You want a deep cut? Nicolas Freeling's Van der Valk series follows the Dutch detective's entire career and even includes his death, after which the series shifts to his wife Arlette. It's a raw, unconventional look at a detective's life and its impact on those left behind.

Peter Temple's 'Jack Irish' series is Aussie noir at its best. Jack is a lawyer-turned-investigator in Melbourne, not a cop, but his cases involve digging through legal and criminal underworlds with a specific, gritty procedure. The dialogue is razor-sharp, the mood is beautifully bleak, and the city is a character. Following Jack's haunted, dogged pursuit of truth (and the occasional horse-racing scam) across a few books is a masterclass in terse, powerful storytelling. The TV adaptations are great too.
