There were some pretty wild fan theories about Haise Sasaki’s true identity and the Cochlea during the ':re' arc. Pretty much the entire online community was analyzing every panel, every line of dialog. When the actual answers did come, they sent the online forums into a frenzy of excitement. There was something really special about getting to experience that shared sense of discovery when reading a series online, something that’s greatly lacking when you binge read a series later. It was like being part of one huge, online detective story. The smoothness of binging is just not the same as the weekly/monthly experience of online reading an ongoing series and being able to discuss and anticipate with fellow readers.

We can see the massive influence of fanfiction and fan culture when looking at how fans of various anime series perceive these shows. Most shonen anime have lots of subtext regarding possible gay relationships between the characters. However, in most cases, it is the fanfiction that provides the maturest and most explicit gay relationships and thus seems to better fulfill the needs of fans who are looking for ‘mature gay’ stories. While it is not a substitute for more quality BL anime, it is an enormous and creative outlet that more and more fans are discovering and utilizing to their full potential. It also speaks volumes for the great demand and interest in homoseausl stories within the anime fandom, since clearly the vast majority of fans are more than willing to donate countless hours of their free time to creating and sharing these stories with others all over the world and building up large communities of fans with like interests and interpretations.

Here’s a brief rundown on the different anime streaming services from a practical perspective. Choose the ones that contain the type of mature anime that you’re looking for. For current season anime (pretty much all raw with a large amount of sub-only premieres), I’d recommend starting with Crunchyroll. For more cinematic and auteur-driven works, including many anime films, Netflix is a great choice and contains a lot of boundary-pushing anime that really delve into style and theme in a deep way, similar to works like Perfect Blue. I also use HIDIVE to find the classic anime, fully uncensored anime, and all of the really obscure cult style titles that aren’t available on the other services. Often times a title will be available on HIDIVE that isn’t available on the other services. I also like to switch services by season to try to get the most bang for my buck and to keep my watchlist varied and exciting. There is really a lot of great dark and thought provoking anime out there for us to watch.

The biggest problem with the inconsistent enforcement of the rules is that it makes unsafe practices shaky ground. Now, my approach to Tumblr is pretty much to follow a bunch of artists and use it as a RSS feed for their announcements, and follow links to their blogs to see their latest work. It’s pretty disappointing, but that’s how Tumblr is now, really.

hopefully they will make an English dub for ‘Tokyo Revengers’ Season 4 in India. In my little world of TV series fans, English dubs are usually released first and then there is a delay for local language dubs to release, if the series does get to release in a particular geography. It all depends on big streaming services in India to commission local dubs for a big price and then release them for viewers. I will keep an eye on the streaming channel’s main feed and social media accounts for updates on the show. Till then, I will go back and re-watch some of the intense scenes and relive them again with subtitles. But, yes, a local dub would be great to watch with friends over a weekend on streaming, for some binge watching fun!

Never. I learned that the hard way when I first joined Naver Webtoon, since I was reading so much online manga with hazy lines and everything. So, I searched for some of the more mature genres, but the results were so bland. Even the “mature” ones are mostly psychological or with lots of violence, not sex. The consequences of a curated garden: yes, it is “easier” to read, to browse around without the fear of clicking on malware-ridden ads, to navigate, but we’re definitely missing out on many, many stories of human experience. Especially the more complex, adult ones, with all their writhings, relations, and woes. Instead, they’re sanitised, and oftend not even as good as their uncensored counterparts. This is why Webtoon exists: for the masses of readers who seek escapism, are looking for a trip of power, or want sweet romances with little complexity. But for the reader who seeks explicitly adult content, browsing through Webtoon is like roaming the young adult section of a library, looking for the restricted adult section.

I think 15 is the minimum age for this film (and even then it depends on the 15 year old in question and whether they are already consuming a lot of mature media). It’s a hard PG-13/R borderliner. The film lacks explicit nudity and sex but is pushed into the R-rated category due to extreme levels of violence and mature themes that are well beyond PG-13. It’s one of those “rating pending” type of films that elicits much controversy and arguing amongst people because it refuses to categorize itself in any particular manner, including by age. My final, unhelpful response to this question is that this film is suitable for anyone who is able to handle its very unique, brutal and brilliant brand of cinema.

Looking at purely accessible production values (ie: good anime with decent plots and nice animation) then titles from the last 5-10 years would be best for a beginner. Before then there were titles, yes, but they’re rough by today’s standards. So maybe make a filter for ‘titles from the last 5 years’ and pick the most popular one to start with.

After romance there is always love lost. It's a fairly universally acknowledged truth. Often these storylines follow on from a previous romantic work but while that first was taking its characters from abstemious lust to something way more real this other work looks at how people grow apart over time. The most definitive work on human growth and how time and space can tear apart two people with the deepest of connections of childhood is 5 Centimeters per Second. 'The Garden of Words' is another beautifully written and directed film by Makoto Shinkai. This one is a bit shorter, and a lot denser. It follows a young student who meets a older woman in a garden’s pavilion on rainy mornings. Their relationship is ambiguous and there’s a clear feeling of both of them being saved by the other from their lonely lives. It’s a poem-like film and it explores the idea of a fleeting but very impactful connection with another human being. In contrast, ‘I Want to Eat Your Pancreas’ is not exactly a romantic film, although there is a very deep and powerful romance in it. Instead it explores the impact that a truly deep and honest connection can have on someone’s life, even if it’s not meant to last.
