Will The Tokyo Revengers Season 4 Release Date In India Be Dubbed?

hopefully they will make an English dub for ‘Tokyo Revengers’ Season 4 in India. In my little world of TV series fans, English dubs are usually released first and then there is a delay for local language dubs to release, if the series does get to release in a particular geography. It all depends on big streaming services in India to commission local dubs for a big price and then release them for viewers.

I will keep an eye on the streaming channel’s main feed and social media accounts for updates on the show. Till then, I will go back and re-watch some of the intense scenes and relive them again with subtitles. But, yes, a local dub would be great to watch with friends over a weekend on streaming, for some binge watching fun!

Anime localization for the India market generally is English-dubbed and released quickly to a global audience, while Hindi-dubbed versions of anime often are the purview of local licensees. Given that Netflix India and Amazon Prime Video in India have invested in regional language catalogs for titles such as Cardinal and The Grand Tour, it is possible that, if Season 4 of the anime is licensed by either of these services, it will be dubbed in Hindi and/or in other languages such as Tamil and Telugu for the Indian market.

Timing-wise, I wouldn’t count on a localization as early as a month, though some can roll out within two months or so. Typically though, localization is rolled out later as an ‘add-on’ — although licensors are more likely to permit localization if the show has high demand, or where earlier seasons have performed well in the region of India. If I do end up watching the simulcast, I very much hope they release the dubbed version later, and I’ll cheer if that does indeed happen within a reasonable time frame, even if that does end up being later than the simulcast.

Licensing + platform strategy + fan demand = dubbing outcome. A tiny industry can be detected by breaking this down into three. First, there is the matter of the Indian streaming rights to the anime. It is the person or entity who has licensed the series to stream in India who has the final say. It can be a Crunchyroll/Aniplex style of deal that prioritizes the English dubbed version of a series first and then others, or it can be a global player such as Netflix or Amazon who greenlight for local language dubbed versions of a series for specific markets that they are targeting.

Platform strategy for wider audiences requires investment in English dubs as a minimum, with some global players like Amazon, also producing dubbed versions in local languages for specific markets they are targeting. Typically this requires 3-6 weeks for Casting, Direction and Recording post Japanese airdate.

Third, look at the previous seasons of ‘Tokyo Revengers’ that had been released in India. If it had got good numbers, had generated enough buzz amongst the social media crowd, and merchandise had done well enough then it would make sense for them to do local dubs for the show. I would follow the official handles of the show as well as the streaming platform that it is available on. They would announce the local dubs for the show. I would definitely switch to the dubbed version of the show the moment it is available. Sometimes it’s more fun to re-watch a show when you can hear familiar accents.

I am highly fascinated with Season 4 of ‘Tokyo Revengers’ being dubbed in India. Will it or not is entirely up to the streaming platform that manages to get the rights to Season 4. Based on past experiences with simulcasts, first to arrive would be an English dub of the episodes, possibly a few weeks to a few months after the corresponding Japanese episodes have aired. Adding Hindi, Tamil or Telugu dubs for episodes would then be up to the distributor – Netflix India, Amazon Prime Video India or Disney+ Hotstar in this case – and would depend on the distributor’s investment in the localized version and their assessment of market demand for it.

I will be following the official 'Tokyo Revengers' Twitter account, along with the catalogs of Indian streaming services as I hope they will make available at least the English dubbed version, when it is released a few weeks to a few months after the Japanese version, and then maybe the local language versions a few months later if the season manages to get enough traction with Indian audiences. I really hope for a Hindi dubbed version though, that would be amazing to watch and discuss with fellow fans!
