A bit of background – when we encounter any issues with OverDrive borrowing on a Kobo (e.g. books not downloading, not syncing, etc.), the first things to check are the library card expiration date, and the linking of the library account to the Kobo in the Kobo apps settings. Restarting the device, updating to the latest Kobo firmware, and reconnecting to Wi-Fi generally fixes any issues. Sometimes these errors occur simply because of a temporary server glitch. Waiting an hour usually fixes the problem. I have just completed downloading my last OverDrive borrow ‘Lethal Obsession: Bound To The Alpha's Curse’ (a paranormal romance where a human female must survive and find a way to break a lycanthrope's ancient curse to save her own life) and it downloaded without issue after a quick reset.

I enjoy reading on my Kobo books and most of the time my overdrive books download with no problem. Occasionally I have trouble borrowing books, and after some trial and error I have a few tips that may help.

Make sure your Kobo device is running on the latest Kobo firmware. (Access Settings > Firmware Update and check for any software updates.) Once updated, switch off your device and re-start it. It’s often these simple things that fix the majority of connectivity issues. Also, ensure your Wi-Fi connection is enabled and correctly accessing the Wi-Fi network you require. OverDrive is an online service and it therefore requires an active internet connection to download and access e-books.

Also be aware that you need to add the correct library card to your Kobo and that you select “OverDrive” when clicking “Get Books” from the home screen of your Kobo. And then of course enter the correct library card number. A small mistake when typing in the card number will lead to problems when trying to borrow books. Also make sure that your library supports OverDrive. Some libraries have made different agreements with OverDrive then others, so it might not be possible to borrow e-books from your local library through OverDrive.

You can always come back and try to borrow a title that isn’t available right now. Also, many digital libraries are constantly being updated and sometimes even titles that are temporarily unavailable are added back to the collection. The titles that you want to read the most you can always add to your wishlist. Perhaps, we’ll even read them to you in audio format.

It may help you identify why the issue is happening when you access your OverDrive account via a web browser to view your Holds or Loans. (Note that with some errors, the problem may appear to resolve itself on your eReader after you have reset it, yet you may be left with no clear explanation of what caused the problem in the first place.) As always, if all of the above fails, contacting the support team at Kobo can be extremely helpful.

Overall, troubleshooting can be very frustrating but solving the few problems that may occur when using your Kobo for OverDrive borrowing is easily done with a bit of patience and knowledge on how to approach the problem. Hopefully, this article has given you a bit of help back on to your eReading adventures!

A less obvious setting in the Kobo books reader is for regional settings. OverDrive/Libby e-books are generally tied to specific library systems, so it’s easy for a Kobo with ‘wrong’ country settings for a store to not find any e-books for that store. Go to Settings > Device Information > Country and make sure this is set for your library’s country. Traveling? Buying a Kobo somewhere that’s not your home country? Be prepared for some hassle. Some Kobo models are only fully supported for borrowing OverDrive e-books in certain countries – you can check on Kobo’s support pages for your model (e.g. Libra 2, Sage). One final point about borrowing books with a Kobo: if you have multiple libraries listed on your single OverDrive account then the Kobo can get very confused as to which library to try and borrow books from. In order to get around this, you can temporarily remove all but your primary library from your OverDrive account on your computer and then re-add all your libraries after you have managed to borrow and download a book with your Kobo. It’s a right old nasty process but it’s the only way that I have found to deal with this. Obviously, for simple accounts it never happens, but it seems to be a more common problem with more complex accounts.

Just feeling your pain here. I want to read a library book, not become a systems administrator. The fragmentation of responsibility in this little ecosystem is just maddening - is this a Kobo problem, an OverDrive problem, an Adobe problem, a library problem, an ISP problem? I've spent hours navigating the respective support forums for each of these players, only to have each point a finger at the others. My solution to all of this: Document, document, document. When you finally do manage to get this to work, write down every single step that you took to get here. Save that in a note somewhere. Because six months from now, this is all going to break again, and you'll have to go through this whole puzzle all over again. I don't have any solutions to offer up here. The best that anyone can do is to try to patch things up as best that they can with a few bandaids and hope that someone else comes along and builds a better system here. In the mean time, I hope your Wi-Fi is strong and your syncs are all successful.

Nothing much to add re: troubleshooting this, but this is a pretty great thread for all of us suffering through Kobo OverDrive. Shared pain is really the only thing that bonds us together as a group, and I for one just want to be able to read free books on my pretty e-reader. Good luck, y'all. I'm going to go call my Kobo “stupid” and then read on my phone instead.

Why are my holds missing in overdrive kobo?

I'm guessing this is a sync issue as Kobo books don't constantly poll for updates. Usually, books sync when you open Overdrive on your Kobo, or on a very slow schedule. Try forcing a sync by opening up the Overdrive menu on your Kobo, and look for an option that says 'Sync' or 'Refresh'. Then wait for the spinning icon to finish up. If your holds don't show up after that, the next step to try is to disconnect and re-add your Overdrive account in the Kobo system settings. A real pain, but the typical solution.

How to fix common issues with e readers kobo?

Your Kobo eBook reader can be sped up by reducing the number of titles displayed on the home screen ‘Recently Read’ carousel. Set this to show the last 3 or so books instead of 10. Also disable the ‘What’s New’ section as this contains a lot of graphics and, more importantly, animations which all use processor power. A minimalist home screen is the fastest way to get on with reading. In addition to these settings, it is also worth noting that sideloaded books with high-resolution cover images can negatively impact performance when viewed in your library. Resize these images to 600×800 in Calibre before transferring them and you will find that scrolling through your collection of eBooks is significantly smoother. As with any other device, performance tuning for an eReader is a real thing and even small changes can add up.

Official help is provided for some of the problems, but what if those are not enough? You have to seek help of forums like XDA Developers and MobileRead. We talk about manual changes to database as well as about firmware rollbacks. It is a deep and nasty problem but sometimes it is the only solution.

How to sync Overdrive books to Kindle devices?

Does Kindle sync page positions with Kindle copies loaded on other devices (e.g. Libby app on a phone)? I would need this to work as a separate reading experience from my current Kindle reading, but have it remember my place between uses (reading on phone while out and about, and then on Kindle at home).

How to troubleshoot Anna Archive download issues?

Is someone else in your household or on your network downloading large files? You may be exceeding your ISP’s bandwidth cap or “fair use” policy for bandwidth. Although some providers don’t enforce limits, others do. If you download too many large files within a billing cycle, they may reduce your bandwidth to a very slow speed in order to complete the download. In addition, other large downloads, such as video streaming in 4K, online gaming, and more can consume all of the bandwidth on your local home network, causing your download to time out. Try to download large archives when the usage on your local home network is low.

How to troubleshoot libgen library genesis download issues?

Sometimes it seems that really old books or books that are requested by only a few people are only hosted on a handful of mirrors. In that case it may take some time to download, and it’s best to try downloading at different times of the day. As for more popular books, the problem that users encounter is that of mirror overload. Click on ‘Mirrors’ or ‘Mirrors [1]’, etc. next to the file in the list to see all the alternative mirrors that the file is hosted on. Don’t rely on the first mirror listed. The ‘IPFS’ gateway links (often found next to the HTTP mirrors) can also be used when the HTTP mirrors aren’t working. These links are to decentralized IPFS gateways and can be slower, but they often work when the other mirrors do not. Users with Tor can also try downloading from .onion site of LibGen, since it receives less traffic and is less likely to be blocked.

How to download books from Kobo to my device?

Error messages when trying to download e-books purchased through Kobo through Adobe Digital Editions often reference a DRM error. I have found that de-authorizing and re-authorizing my computer to use ADE (Help>de-authorize computer then re-authorize computer with same Adobe ID) usually solves the problem first. Next, check that the Kobo book in question has been added to your account’s library of purchased books. Occasionally download links expire but can be re-downloaded from Kobo website as an ACSM file with a fresh download link usually generated. I also ensure I’m running the most up-to-date version of ADE as older versions have been known to fail to work with more recent DRM schemes – tedious troubleshooting that usually fixes 90% of failed download errors I encounter.

How to troubleshoot Kindle not showing book covers correctly?

12 Answers2026-07-27
I totally get the frustration when book covers don't show up properly. The first thing I'd check is whether the book file has an embedded cover. Some sideloaded books might not include cover images, so you might need to use tools like Calibre to fix this. Just open the book in Calibre, edit the metadata, and ensure the cover is properly attached. Another common issue is the Kindle's cache. Sometimes, the device just needs a reset to refresh the display. Go to 'Settings,' then 'Device Options,' and hit 'Restart.' If that doesn't work, try removing the book from your device and redownloading it. Amazon's servers occasionally glitch, and a fresh download can fix the issue. For sideloaded books, converting the file to AZW3 or KFX format often helps, as these formats support better cover display than MOBI. Lastly, if you're using Amazon's personal documents service, make sure the email you're sending from is whitelisted in your Kindle settings. Sometimes, covers get stripped during email transfers. If all else fails, contacting Amazon support might be your best bet—they can sometimes force a cover refresh on their end.

How to fix formatting issues on kobo clara bw novels?

9 Answers2025-07-28
It’s also worth noting that the source file may need some tuning before side loading, as I found out with some poorly converted EPUBs leading to wonky spacing. Using ebook-convert from Calibre (on the PC) to reformat the book to a Kobo Clara optimized ebook (in EPUB format) sorted the spacing out completely. This also cleans up the CSS and reflows the content, stripping out any numbers of render snagging formatting tags. Some older ebooks contain font-size tags that the Clara’s relatively simple ebook reader interprets strangely. And then make sure to safely eject the device from your computer, to avoid writing metadata that messes up how your ebooks appear to read. A soft reset (hold the power button for 20 seconds or so) usually will fix up newly added ebooks too. Note, though, that the ultimate reset to resolve such persistent problems and get your Kobo back to full, factory-default operation is also to perform a full factory reset. (Yes, a real pain, but there it is.)

I really like the process they've laid out for digital books, but in the end I'm just a girl who loves the smell of books and the feel of paper between her fingers. So, physical copies it is for me, and I wish the digital crew the best of luck!
