I swear, it’s so hard to find a legitimate stream for some things these days. After an hour of searching, I gave up and watched the (horrendously shot) cam rip someone else had uploaded to a video host for the hardcore folk out there. Terrible quality, but it’s better than nothing and at least it was there. Heck, sometimes the ‘official’ way just isn’t there for global audiences and you just have to accept that for some things. It’s a weird grey area – producers want to monetise their work, but platforms which could aid in wider distribution of said content actively don’t want it. Consequently, such material tends to end up in a sort of distribution limbo, where the most dedicated fans can usually manage to track it down to some extent.

I don’t really have any other locations to post, as the official Toho YouTube channel already does a great job of this. But, the character designs for this are all fantastic. Each one is really unique and full of personality. I enjoyed seeing them all in motion in this new, high-definition upload so much. The quality of the animation, the expressive reactions to different situations, and the work that went into making the comedic sequences really work all are things that can get lost in low quality, low-bitrate rips of the anime on other websites. So, for the best way to enjoy this, go to the official channel. Even though the anime is serving up some of the most ludicrous plot points out there, the good animation is worth appreciating.

Putting the issue of streaming aside for the moment, I have to mention that the English dub for Macross Dirty Pair is a really funny time capsule. The voice acting in it has a very specific flavor that I would charactorize as slightly awkward early-2000s ADR. It’s not good enough to sit down and watch, but it would be worth a listen as a curiosity. I believe that Macross Dirty Pair was produced by Central Park Media, and after they went under the resulting chaos scattered their assets far and wide. Nozomi Entertainment (Right Stuf’s label) has several of the CPM titles, but I don’t see Macross Dirty Pair on their YouTube channel or on their website store. I think it’s one of the many titles from a publisher that went under that are now stuck in legal limbo. The rights to them have reverted to their creator(s), but nobody knows who that is, so no one can legally re-license them. It’s a sad state of affairs for many classic anime. Occasionally some of these lost titles turn up when long forgotten paperwork is discovered.

I have a very vague recollection of being able to watch One Team 2P on Viewster years ago, but that service is no longer with us. The digital rights for anime seem to flit from platform to platform until they land on the service with the biggest library, which these days is post-merger Crunchyroll. The aging shows seem to have found a home in the ‘Anime Archive’ – it’s not exactly something you’d search for, but it is there if you do search for old stuff. It’s also a nice indicator of just how much the streaming market has consolidated, for better or for worse. These days finding anime is less about searching around to find a load of different services that stream it, and more about knowing whether or not to look at one of two services.

One of the biggest issues with UI scaling on larger screens like TVs is that interfaces designed for small touchscreens (like a phone) look awful when cast up to larger screens. Even with larger buttons on the remote control, interfaces on larger screens can look pixelated and have buttons and other elements spaced too far apart. Native TV apps on the other hand have been designed specifically for ten-foot viewing and therefore have larger text and simpler navigation with full support for directional pad controls. There is no comparison to the speed and intuitive nature of using a TV app with a remote control versus the experience of using a cast phone interface.

This thread could become a decent resource on specific titles, having a known peculiarity, eg being only available on the German Amazon Prime or even the uncut version only being included on a special edition Spanish Blu-ray. As a horror aficionado, I’m aware of where to find uncut versions of the 80s slashers. The French extremity films and classic old Hollywood noirs will likely have their own specialists. Sharing one’s knowledge is how we get around these types of restrictions.

For example, you can find big-figure conflicts like the colossal threats in 'Attack on Titan' on Crunchyroll and Hulu in many regions, and the tiny-person charm of 'The Secret World of Arrietty' pops up on Netflix or Prime depending on licensing. Also don't sleep on 'Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid' on Crunchyroll — Kanna’s childlike/small-school scenes capture a similar miniature-school dynamic even though it’s not strictly size-change as a premise. If you want the specific niche of 'size-change' or giantess content, it’s more scattered. Use platform search tags like "giant", "shrink", "tiny people", and "size change" and check community lists on MyAnimeList or Reddit where fans collect one-offs and episodes from longer shows. Japanese platforms such as NicoNico, and Chinese platforms like Bilibili sometimes host clips and official uploads that don't make it to western services. Be mindful of region locks—what’s on Netflix in one country might be absent in another. Personally I love the way these stories mix slice-of-life with the surreal; hunting them down across services feels like a mini quest, and when I stumble on a rare gem it’s oddly satisfying.

I picked ‘Wave, Listen to Me!’, a workplace drama with supernatural elements, as it is a hidden gem. A loud and boorish waitress accidentally gets hired for a late-night radio show after a night of heavy drinking and actually turns out to be great at it. The show looks at the crazy mayhem of working in live radio and the burnout of creating something new while also exploring career change in your late 20s. The protagonist, Minare, is an amazing, adult, woman – flawed, fierce and passionate. It’s really sharp, funny and has loads of heart.

If there’s a mobile game, for example, ‘BanG Dream! Girls Band Party!’ or ‘D4DJ Groovy Mix’ then these games also count towards your viewing of anime and are interactive versions of the world, characters and music from the anime that you can play for free with some in-app purchases of course. As opposed to simply watching a streaming version of the new ‘story’, in a game you experience it, interact with the animations and characters and listen to the brand new songs while exploring in depth the different story paths, including an alternative story line to the anime. Thus a ‘true fan’ will experience new paths to the stories of the underground idol universe while his engagement will be correctly counted for the purposes of the series’ success.
