His mind was full… too full, too loud and tangled.
By the time they reached the car, he felt mentally drained. He got into the back seat without a word.
Paulo slid into the driver’s seat and started the engine.
For a while, there was silence. Only the soft hum of the car punctuated the silence.
Then Paulo spoke. “For someone who just left the lion’s den alive,” he said, glancing at the mirror, “you’re too quiet.”
Lewis didn’t even look up.
“What do you want me to say?” he replied dryly. “My last prayers?”
