“If I step away now, I don’t know if this ends.” Maxwell’s voice was rough. “Then we figure it out later. But we’re not dying here.” The First breathed, slowly, deliberately. “There will be no later.” Soraya cursed. “What the hell is that supposed to mean?” The First stepped forward. It was a slow movement, deliberate, heavy. Like she was heavy with something I could not see. “As soon as the last tether fell, the war restarted. The Old Ones will return. That is inevitable.”

Not secrets. ⸻ The kind that burns countries to the ground.

"Why? What does a war between us give him?" "Chaos." Lena's voice was exhausted and certain. "The Inter-Pack Council's mandate expands dramatically in times of active conflict. Maybe we'll have to face vampires after all, this looks very bad," Marcus says. "I don't know, but we won't be afraid to face the people who want to harm us, so let's arm ourselves with courage and eradicate evil from the world. And if we need to go to war to achieve that, so be it," says Lyra optimistically.

It’s been here since the dawn of time and will continue into eternity; and I intend to finish what my forebears started.”

All the players in the future war are in place, the only thing missing from the volatile mix is a catalyst. I postulate for a moment that it should be called The Present War now. It’s been coming for so long it started to feel like we would never catch up with the future, yet here we are, on the cusp of our making, or demise. The elders, for all their wisdom, never saw the outcome. All we have been able to do is stack the odds in our favour, recruit the most powerful clans and covens, set wheels in motion that will roll steadily along, until they come up against this foretold resistance. ‘The long game’ means something different to an immortal, but the end game, that is what it’s all about.
