George's hand found my arm before I'd finished processing the question. "Nothing is wrong." Carol turned the screen toward us. "I want you to look at something." I looked. Two. There were two. Two distinct shapes, two unmistakable flickers of movement, two separate heartbeats playing out in counterpoint on the screen — rapid and certain and impossibly, abundantly real. I heard George make a sound I had never heard from him before. Not words. Just a sound, low and sudden, like something had knocked the air out of him.

He stood. “I hope he deserves you. I really do.” He didn’t wait for a reply. He walked out. And I sat there, staring at the half-finished muffin in front of me, wondering how one heart could carry so much weight from so many people. Later that evening, when Ruben found me curled up in the reading room, he didn’t ask questions. He just laid down beside me and placed his hand over my stomach. “Do you ever wish we met under different circumstances?” I asked softly.

Until then, I have only one task: to keep the two small hearts safe beneath my own, so the world cannot steal them from me. The cistern passage is cool and damp, water trickling down the walls, dripping rhythmically into grooves carved in the stone, as if the earth’s heart itself beat slowly. The torch flame flickers in a tiny dance, fighting the heavy dark, but after each turn I feel as though the shadows try to swallow it, closing around us again and again. Yet the soft breathing of the twins strapped to my chest warms me with the reminder: they are here, and every step is for them.

They no longer felt human emotions. I couldn't tell if Magnus' treatment of me came from fear of the drug inside him, or from some genuine desire to care for me. How did I become so hesitant, so unsure of myself? Maybe it was because I had never really known love. When I was young, Anya had been gravely ill. My parents poured every bit of their hearts into her, and to them, I was just the extra, the one they could overlook. Perhaps that was why, later, I gave my whole heart to Victor just for the smallest bit of kindness. And now with Magnus, love was still my greatest weakness.

Not like he did. The torches lining the hallway flickered as I made my way toward the Nirhet Chambers.
