More sugar than substance. “So?” she prompts. “It’s good, right?” I tip my head. “It’s better than the burger.” “I love milkshakes. It’s the best.” I can’t resist, not when I see her hollow cheeks as she sucks in rapture, her eyelashes fluttering as she takes a greedy mouthful.

With her nod of approval, I retrieved my black card from my small bag and placed my pizza order with the salesperson, specifying her chosen flavors. “All large.” When the vendor saw my method of payment, her eyes widened. After swiping the card, and while our pizza order was being prepared, we went to the shake drink stand, and Brianna pointed to the milkshake flavor with a cherry topping. “How many do you want, baby?” She raised her pointed middle fingers. “Two large milkshakes?” I confirmed enthusiastically. After she agreed, I told the salesperson Brianna’s order. “Does this have any nuts in it?” I asked to make sure.

I will throw up if I drink or eat anything right now.” I told him the reason truthfully and took a sip of lemon water that I bought for myself earlier.
