“Hi, Mrs. Beatrice.” I greeted her warmly as I approached. “You look even more beautiful.” I flattered her just to show I'm happy to see her.

“Thank you, Veronica. You’re beautiful too. By the way, congratulations. I heard you’re a candidate for The Edison Achievement Award.”

I smiled, pretending to be happy about that award. I’m not really a candidate, I paid a big amount to be one of the candidates. I don’t care about the award, what’s important is that I get to be here at this award ceremony because of Calix.

“Don’t congratulate me yet, the winner of this award hasn’t been announced yet.”

“Whatever the result, it’s a major achievement just to be considered as a candidate. That’s something to be celebrated.”

I nearly rolled my eyes, but I managed to catch myself just in time. Instead, I plastered on the sweetest smile I could muster, hoping it would hide the fact that his constant congratulations were grating on my last nerve. And then, of course, came the unsolicit
