She fell only a step behind him. It was a beautiful moonlight and cold night. She followed his stride, "Couldn't you sleep, my King?" He kept silent for a full minute. "I haven't been able to sleep in a while." He glared at her like it's her fault. "I'm sorry, my king." His throat worked. He faced forward again, "It's not your fault." He sighed at last. "Tonight, I had a nightmare." She guessed as much. The king is a man with a horrible past, it's only fitting to think that it's nightmares of the past that kept him awake.

Evening had settled over Ancnix in a wash of lantern-gold and rising noise. The city was far from sleeping — laughter and music were already spilling through the streets as families and graduates made their way toward the packhouse for the night’s celebration. Footsteps, voices, and the distant pulse of drums drifted through the palace windows, a reminder that the kingdom was gathering above while its true work unfolded below. I replied. He studied me for a moment, then he set his glass down and stood. He said something to the man at the door in a different language, a short instruction and the man left. “You understand what tonight is.” The king said, it wasn’t a question. “It changes nothing about the primary agreement, but it satisfies the immediate obligation. Just one night.” My jaw tightened but I kept my expression level. “I understand.” He nodded once, then he moved to the side door, opened it and stepped aside.
