Adam glanced back down at the page, a faint smirk returning. “Man handled it though,” he murmured. “Didn’t panic, didn’t fumble it… just stayed in it.” He closed the book halfway again, shaking his head with a quiet chuckle. “Still… that’s not for everybody,” he added. “Takes a certain kind of mindset to even step into something like that.” He looked at the cover for a second, then back at the pages. “This book really doesn’t miss,” he said under his breath. Then, without hesitation—

Tris felt a shiver run down her spine as she realized that he was staring at her. "Ah, it looks like the book is currently checked out," Tris said, trying to sound apologetic. "Would you like to reserve it?" The man nodded, his eyes never leaving hers. "Yes, please. I'd greatly appreciate it." Tris smiled and began to process the reservation. As she worked, she couldn't help but steal glances at the mysterious stranger. Who was he, and what was he doing here? As Tris worked on reserving the book, the man continued to lean against the shelf, his eyes fixed intently on her. Tris felt a shiver run down her spine as she realized that he was staring at her, his gaze piercing and unnerving.

Ace was a little confused as to why this woman was sitting in the empty chair in front of him. Ace glanced up, his curiosity piqued by the unexpected intrusion. His gaze narrowed as he observed the woman, his expression guarded as he reached for the folder. Who is this woman? How did she receive this? Flipping it open, his eyes widened in recognition as he scanned the contents within—George's name emblazoned across the top in bold letters. As he dove deeper into the dossier, his lips curled into a sinister smile, a predatory gleam flickering in his eyes. The woman watched him closely, her own expression inscrutable as she awaited his reaction.

But he couldn’t save the books, hence, all the books got the turf from the paddle of mud water on the road brought in by the rain earlier. “What the hell?” the young man hissed. The young man soon picked up all the books and to his anguish, most of the novels got wet. He sighed as he picked everything. “You should have looked where you were going,” the man said indifferently. With knitted brows, the youngster glared at the man in front of him. The man’s apparel shouts extravagance and everything about him stands out. Realizing that he wouldn’t win against the man, the youngster just passed through, ignoring the man as if nothing happened.

“He’s not a threat. Not here.” “Then what is he?” Gareth said. No one answered. Calla chimed in from the back seat. “He’s a man who just lost everything he built over fifteen years. He needs a place to put that feeling.” She gazed out the window. “I’ve seen it before. When everything falls apart, the ones at the top don’t always run. Sometimes, they head straight for the source.” “Why?” I asked. “Because the source is the only thing that helps them make sense of it,” she said. “You blew up his world. Now he wants to look you in the eye and figure out how.”

Ever since I came back to the sect, Julian Zackman stayed by my side, caring for me with devotion. He never complained, even though he had lost an arm and everything was inconvenient for him. Every morning without fail, he would bring me my medicine. He would gently blow on it to cool it down, then lift the spoon to my lips. “Queenie, be good. Drink your medicine. You’ll recover faster if you take it.” His acting was so flawless, as if he were still the Julian who loved me to the core.

Long legs bent awkwardly. One arm tucked beneath his head. The other hanging off the edge. His white shirt was wrinkled. Still partially unbuttoned. Sleeves rolled. Dark hair messy. Face softer in sleep. Younger somehow. Less dangerous. Almost… boyish. Emma leaned against the counter. Watching him. This man— who terrified boardrooms. Who commanded rooms with silence. Who could destroy empires with one phone call— had slept on her couch. Guarding her door. A warmth bloomed in her chest.

“Well look at this, a couple of nasty little bitches riding their dirty animals. I thought it worked the other way around. If I didn’t know any better, I would say that you are trying to make off with three of my pets.” The wolves turned around slowly to face the man. He was not so impressive when he wasn’t hidden behind her back or behind a bunch of blinding lights. He was tall but thin and probably in his mid to late fifties. His head was mostly bald save for an awful attempt at a comb-over. He wore a nice suit underneath a perfectly starched white lab coat. I think we’re in trouble now. What’s going on up there? Tell me they’re not here to fight you.
