She always knew how to survive. But I had no room left for politics. Every time I closed my eyes, I saw Ember’s face under that light—half fury, half fire. I couldn’t tell if she was calling for me or warning me away. We moved through the burnt valleys at dawn, ash crunching under our boots. Scouts reported strange shadows hunting in the woods, things that wore the shapes of men but smelled like death. The witch’s shades. I could feel her circling us, waiting. Then I felt her.

Light swallowed everything. Not fire, not storm, not ember, something older. It surged through the clearing, so bright the roots shrieked and shriveled back into the dirt. My chest split open, ember blazing wild, tethered to the shadow's core by a burning thread. I couldn't breathe. Couldn't move. The chains wrapped around the shadow writhed, hissing as if alive. Their silver gleam turned black where the ember struck, but instead of breaking, they tightened, biting deeper into the figure's form.

But she lifted her chin. “Tell me.” The dungeon seemed to inhale. Lazriel spoke carefully. Too carefully. “The prophecy Seren saw in her latest vision; it speaks of flame dying by shadow to sever the bond that sustains her reign.” Ember didn’t flinch. “It says,” Caelan added quietly, “that shadow must kill flame. Only then will the gate fracture.” He didn’t say my name. He didn’t have to. Ember turned toward me fully then. Her expression didn’t hold fear. It held decision. My stomach dropped.

I said and sat down, waiting for his food, when the door burst open and a group of guys came into the door and, to my shock, one of them was Noah. "What's up, Landon? What ya, cooking." Jeremy yelled the minute his eyes saw me. Noah's gaze shifted to me too and became dumbfounded. Why? Why was he here? Even worse, the guy who banged him that night was here with him, hugging and acting like a leech on Noah's shoulder. I felt so sick to the stomach. How dare he? Were they both stalking me? He has the guts to come here. "Larisa.' He whispered and got close to me. I went over to him and slapped him hard in the face.

Nate whispered in my ear looking down at our children. "I love you Nate Viseron." I replied. I found a book that seemed nice and pulse-racing, Blood Brothers by Nora Roberts. I took it off the shelf and looked back at Ashton who was now holding Jack in his hands. I went to the till and paid for the book. We then went out of the shop and headed to the car park. When we got to the car park, I got in and took Jack from Ashton to remove him from the cover and place him back on the stand. It was around 5:30 pm so we still had some time before heading home. Ashton read that from my mind and then he went around the car, got in and sat on the seat next to mine.
