Nothing like kings. The post of an Alpha was earned, not inherited. It’s too bad the princes weren’t born in that era. Or no one would have voted that arrogant, entitled Brynne as the next Alpha. A small sigh escapes my lips when I reach the front door. I push it open and enter, eager to drop into my bed. But the relief and warmth fade when I spot Brynne. He’s on the living room floor, back propped against the couch, with his laptop balanced on his knees.

Pine and frost and furious, untamed power. An Alpha’s scent. And it’s coming from right behind me.

“That was a truly valuable insight, Luna Caelthorn.” My smile came easily. “Thank you.” “Yours is different, that’s for sure,” Alpha Ferrin said. “Mine kicks me to the couch if I so much mention business in our bedroom.” Luna Ferrin shrugged unapologetically. “I will do it again and again if that’s what it takes to get into your skull that there is no work in our bedroom.” I could not dare look at the Alpha. I did not need to look to tell that he was livid, the silent kind that felt like a calm before a storm.

I needed to take the vampire out of the picture. I knew where the vampires stayed, I just needed some companions to make it happen. I became the Alpha, my father was old enough to go to where every old Alpha is required to retire. I became the leader of my pack in less than one week. I commanded every wolf, they were mine to command. I let that go into my head as I approached the pack warriors one night. "I am your Alpha, and I have a job for you tonight", I began, using my Alpha voice. "Someone took something from me and we must get it back, a vampire thinks he is the boss, we must show him that is not true, are you with me", I asked.

He hadn’t hurt her, but it certainly looked like he was ready to introduce Shawn to a whole world of pain. Wolves were territorial. Especially the alphas. Damon had been coming on to her—marking her in the way of shifters, she knew that—and then another male had come into the room. So screwed. Shawn was struggling to get out his gun. His fingers were shaking, but, on the third try, he managed to yank the weapon from the holster. Then Shawn tried to lift the gun to Damon’s chest. “No!” Now her scream was full of fear. She raced toward them.

There were variety of meals arranged on the table for us to dive into and the silence was disturbing. "Welcome." Alpha Park was the first to speak, his eyes fixed on me. It grew so uncomfortable that I had to look away yet I could still feel his gaze burning into my skin more than ever. This was actually the first time I would be seeing him in person since the bloodmoon festival. "Thank you Father." Alpha Ryan nodded. He didn't sound as cold as I was used to hearing him sound. "We are all very aware at how your tenure has been deeply affected by all the sad happenings in the pack lately." Alpha park said, digging into his meal with his fork.

But right now, the way he stared… the way his fingers had gripped my waist like I belonged there… It didn’t feel like he was falling for Helena. It felt like he knew it was me. And I didn’t know if I should stop him. Or let it happen. “So Xavier, when are you leaving for the Alpha Week?” Aunt Lena’s voice cut through the silence.. I stopped chewing. Of course. The Alpha Week. The one week where all the pompous Alphas and Lunas from the South-West Council gathered to drink, boast, and pretend they ain't having fun. King Leonard, Xavier’s father, made it a tradition years ago. Said it was to “foster peace and love” between packs.

"Don't think you can deceive me by finding some pretty boy to play along with you. You can't fool me." Rufus's eyebrows furrowed slightly as he turned to Selena. Rufus little boy? He sure doesn't know that the young man he just fought with was the mysterious Alpha of nightfall pack. The young and strong Alpha which no one has saw his face aside from his family, Beta, warriors and guards. Rufus eyebrows were tightened, and there was a hint of coldness in his dark eyes. He didn't react at all to Williams calling him small boy, and didn't even bother to give him a look. Instead, he took the handbag Selena was carrying and said in a low voice. "Let's go."

“Alpha fell asleep. His wolf took over driving. Not sure how long. He’s asleep now. Can you guys help me move him to the passenger seat? I’ll drive.” There was silence for a moment before I heard whoever was driving try and wake up their passengers. Getting out, I went around and opened up the drivers side. Beta Kirk and Gamma Oliver got out, stretching since it seemed like they were asleep. “Sorry to wake you.” Beta Kirk looked at his Alpha. “He hasn’t slept in days. Sometimes he would lightly snooze but this is the first time in over a week.” “Maybe it’s the scent? Finally lulled him to sleep?”

I stay silent as the Alpha and my father talk about pack matters, Alex giving me a reassuring smile. [Remember to tell me all bout your day when you get home tomorrow.] Alex links, giving me a wink and quietly slipping out of the room after I agree happily, heading up the stairs to what I assume is his bedroom. Being the next Beta, I know Alex has been given work from our father to look through on the weekends as a way to train him. He hates it as my brother has little to no freedom to go out on the weekend like a normal teen. Something he complains a lot to me about when ever Alpha Sorus takes me out along with his family.
