she continued, voice low but firm, “without a name, without an invitation, and propose marriage as if I’m some... naive girl waiting for a fairytale. You must think me stupid.”
He didn’t blink. “Not stupid,” he said evenly. “Interesting, perhaps. But stupid? No.”
“Oh, please.” Her laugh was sharp, brittle. “You expect me to believe this ridiculous stunt of yours is anything but a joke?”
He took one step forward. “It’s not a joke.”
Another step.
“Then what is it?” she demanded.
“It’s an offer,” he said, his voice quiet, his eyes never leaving hers. “Marry me, and I’ll put the world at your feet.”
