"Don't touch anything. Don't call anyone. This will all be over soon."
I headed upstairs, my heart pounding with adrenaline. Annalise was still on the floor where I'd left her, cradling her ankle and sobbing dramatically. Derek stood over her like a guardian, his expression somewhere between concerned and amused.
"She tried to grab her phone," he reported. "I may have accidentally kicked it down the stairs."
"Accidentally," I repeated.
"Very accidentally. It just sort of flew out of my hand when she lunged at me."
I smiled despite everything. This man. This ridiculous, wonderful man who'd appeared in my life less than forty-eight hours ago and had already become essential.
