“You said I wasn’t alone.” But deep down, I already knew. I wasn’t. And whoever else was out there waiting for me… they weren’t done yet.

Finally, I’m alone. I proceed to watch the crowd as I slowly sip a second glass of champagne. A band starts up, and the ball turns into more of a party than before. Ten minutes pass, then twenty, then thirty. And, I’m still alone. I don’t know what I was thinking. I know I can’t feel the mate bond. I knew, even before planning this trip, that I wasn’t going to find my mate across the borders of Eastonia.

I folded my arms in front of me and gently rubbed my hands on them when a little cold breeze suddenly enveloped us. So that's why I haven't seen him all day. "I um.....I just came here to be alone for a while." He frowned at me and then looked away at a distance. "By yourself?" "Yep." "Don't you think it's a little, unsafe for a young woman to be out here alone?" It was my turn to frown and I glanced around us in confusion. "It's a public place, people come here all the time. And I can protect myself thank you very much." I added a little too defensively.

I said to no one. And then I stepped forward—alone.

I was left alone. Not for long though.

I didn't want to lose them. I sniffed in, looking everywhere else but at him. "I always thought I was strong. That I could do it all alone, besides, I had Dan and my girls. And my work friend, Dawn." I actually chuckled at that thought. "I'm so lonely now," it was a heavy ache in my chest. "I'm sorry," I quickly got up to my feet. "I should leave."

My heartbeat quickened I was alone!

It is singlehandedly the most peaceful place on Earth and that is where I was headed. As I started down the windy road that led to our deserted patch of land surrounding arrowhead, I realized that this was the first time I had actually gone up here by myself. Usually, Dustin would bring me here when we needed the relaxation and now he is growing up and making new memories with a life of his own. I am now on my own. That thought hadn’t really sunk in until now. Even after my parents passed away, I had actually never thought of myself as truly being alone. I had always had Dustin and his parents. They were my second home.

And he left me there. Alone. In the silence. My heart with someone else? Who is the person?

And for the first time, I didn’t feel alone. Just complete.
