It took several minutes to get to the surface, and by the end, I had walked so fast, without slowing, that I was panting.
And it did feel good to smell the fresh air moving against my cheeks as we approached the entrance. And it did lift my heart a bit to step into the half-sun of a patchy-cloud day.
But it also stopped me in my tracks when I reached the edge of the dirt outside and my footsteps were softened and muffled by grass.
Because I realized… I was alone.

Even Rake was here because Cazz had told him to be.
And it hit me so hard and punched so fast, that I lost my breath. The tears rushed to the surface and I was blinking, blinking, blinking trying to keep them at bay.
