Adam looked at me with compassion, but his eyes held a suppressed anger. “Mr. McCutchen, since your memory is so poor, I can help you add a few details.” Adam said, each word piercing like a blade. “Conversations I’ve had with your daughter in the past, revealed some disturbing truths about her childhood.”

It was giving me peace to know that at least I was away from all the chaos that was going on downstairs. Damon had left early for a meeting with Carter and Ethan. I didn’t ask what it was about, though I had a feeling it wasn’t the kind of thing he wanted to discuss over breakfast. Not when his expression had been so grim. Not when he kissed me like he didn’t know how many kisses we had left. And I didn’t ask… because I wasn’t ready for more answers. Because I was not ready for what was to come. I just knew that being in the office now did not give me peace. It was as if I was waiting for a danger to lurk around the corner.
