My eyes landed on the phone cradle, it's old-fashioned, and rarely touched.
An Ideal.
I knelt, attaching the bug with a strip of adhesive, my fingers steady despite the clock screaming in my mind.
Six minutes left.
The bug clicked into place, its tiny red light blinking once before going dark.
Done!, I tested the connection with my phone, and the signal strong, while the audio clear enough. The job was perfect, just like always.
But then I heard it, a faint beep from downstairs.
