He pulled a folded paper from his backpack and handed it over proudly. Adrian opened it. The drawing showed a large airplane flying through clouds again, but this time there were three stick figures inside. Adrian looked closer. “Who are they?” he asked. Ethan pointed proudly. “That’s me.” Adrian nodded. “And this one?” “That’s Mom.” Adrian hesitated before asking the last question. “And the third one?” Ethan shrugged. “I don’t know yet.” Something about the innocent answer hit Adrian unexpectedly. He folded the paper carefully.

She was somewhere around seven or eight, completely absorbed in whatever she was drawing, her tongue pressed to the corner of her mouth in concentration. It feels like survival. Noah is at the table. Drawing dinosaurs. His tongue is sticking out in concentration. His little hand moves across the paper with purpose. He's making a T-Rex. It's his favorite. He's been drawing them since we brought him home. They're everywhere now. On the fridge. On the walls. On the floor. In our hearts. They're a part of our home.
