Word was Zain had lost the limb while on an op and the injury was the reason for his discharge, but not the end of the road for him. "Where's Silva?" Logan asked. "Don't know," Harper answered. Logan muttered something under his breath. Zain checked his phone. "He's in the building." Nearly every Aegis Group employee had opted into having a subdermal tracking device. In the early days they'd toyed with various trackers that could be worn, but time and time again those devices failed them by being too easily removed. Zain glanced up. "How are you guys doing? Enjoying the warmer weather?"

The primary Aegis system remained at Haven, isolated from ordinary infrastructure. We had learned enough about its connection to Blood Craft to know that taking the entire system into unknown territory would be reckless. The portable core was different. Smaller, shielded and designed to observe rather than interact. At least, that was the intention. Halfway through the flight, Lucien glanced at me. “You've been quiet.” “I'm thinking.” “Dangerous habit.” I ignored him. Asterion sat across from us, watching the terrain below. Eventually, I spoke. “You said earlier that the first Keeper made a bargain with The Hollow Arc.”

“What is it?” “The serial number,” Anton said, his voice trembling. He pointed a shaking finger. “AG-001-α. Alpha. The first. The very first working prototype of the Aegis core.” He looked at Sabe, his eyes wide with a superstitious dread. “I was there when my father destroyed it. He took a hammer to it himself, in the core lab. He said the first iteration was too perfect, too pure. That it had a flaw in its soul. That it needed to be reborn from the ashes. We scattered the fragments.” A chill certainty congealed in the small cabin. The chip lying on the table was more than a copy. It was a ghost.

It jutted from a mound of tangled roots, half-swallowed by vines that shimmered faintly in the dim light. The crystal itself was breathtaking — an ombré of shifting colors that seemed alive: soft pink melting into violet, blue fading into emerald green. The surface glimmered as though tiny stars were trapped inside it.

I stumbled back into the bedroom, my hands shaking as I grabbed the small enchanted pouch from the nightstand. It was empty. Completely empty, except for a tiny pile of fine, silver dust at the bottom. I poured the silver dust into my palm. The last remains of sixty-six moonlight crystals. Every single one was gone. "No… no, this can't be..." my voice trembled. The memory hit me like a tidal wave. Our mating night, six years ago. Elysia’s eyes were filled with happy tears. "These sixty-six crystals," she’d said, "they mean I can forgive you sixty-six times. But if they ever run out, I'm leaving."
