I flinched back, but she kept coming, close enough that I could smell her perfume, the same one she'd worn my entire life, jasmine and something powdery, mother, close enough that I could see the individual tears catching in her wrinkles.
"I didn't know about Paris," she said urgently, grasping my hands, her fingers cold and dry and familiar. "I didn't know you'd met there, that she was who you'd fallen in love with there. I thought, Stephanie told me you were just an affair. A fling. Something Xandr was doing to hurt me, the way she'd always hurt me."
She was shaking my hands now, trying to make me understand, trying to make me feel what she'd felt.
