The room was very quiet the only sounds being the radiator clicking and the wind outside blowing against the windows. The satellite phone on the desk had a screen that made the old stone walls look even colder. To really understand what my father was trying to do I had to know about the Third Key. It was not something I could hold in my hand like a piece of metal. The Third Key was like a code something my father created to keep himself safe. I was sitting in front of the computer my fingers hovering over the keyboard. If I entered the code it would be like going to a place I did not want to be. It would be like telling the world where I was.

ELENA My heels clicked against the cold marble floor of the lobby like a frantic heartbeat I couldn’t control. It was almost 11:30 p.m., and the entire building felt eerily empty. The kind of silence that pressed against your skin. Another fourteen-hour day at the agency had drained me completely, but the moment I stepped through the glass doors, my exhaustion twisted into something else entirely. Anticipation. Fear. And that low, shameful throb I’d been trying to ignore for weeks.

"Input the protocol bypass code: Alpha-Omega-Six-St-Agnes. Overwrite the internal data node, and clear the variance." My breath caught in my throat. St. Agnes. The name of the orphanage from her file. She was using her own untraceable, personal ghost-code to override a multi-million-dollar Swiss bank ledger, and she was doing it while clearly fighting a massive wave of nausea. Vaneau’s fingers practically flew across the digital keyboard, his face flushing a deep crimson as he entered the data. The red crisis bar on his tablet suddenly flickered, flashing a pristine, automated green.
