One of the kids had pulled forward, soon making his way over to Nia, who bore a smile that wasn’t ready to make leave of that entrancing face of hers any time now. It was a young boy with such rich brown eyes that was enough to have the attention anyone close to him. The moonlight which reflected onto his brown skin, gave perfect view, revealing the features of his profile, while he drew to us. I watched the eyes of Nia beam on at the boy, while receiving the handshake he had presented onto her, and then giving a slight bow to both of us, he went back joining the formation. Judging by the way he moved around, speaking to the rest, one could tell he was the leader of the group.

Together, we would weather this storm, until the day we could finally hold Penelope in our arms again. Aiden barged into the room but the dampened atmosphere suddenly changed. His eyes widened at the sight of the blazing book, and without wasting a second, he swiftly placed the bucket of water on the ground and splashed it onto the burning pages. Steam hissed and mingled with the smoke, instantly smothering the flames. "What on earth is happening?" Aiden asked, his voice tinged with concern as he hurriedly grabbed a towel to dry up the soaked carpet beneath the book.

Aiden watched me come. He was still holding the gate bars. As I got closer I could see his face more clearly, the detail that had been lost at distance. He looked like someone who had not slept properly in weeks. His eyes had the particular quality of a person running on adrenaline and anxiety, and underneath the jacket that was wrong for the weather his shirt was slightly untucked on one side. He saw a white book with the Holy Bible boldly written on it. He walked towards the bed and picked it up. He had never used a bible before and didn't know where to find Romans. He checked the first page and found the index. He used that to find the scripture and he read it. 'For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us'

The town is just a graveyard. "Adar would've known by now that someone is here in his territory…so be careful on taking a step" Aidan spoke. ------- (meanwhile) A dark room with a small candle. The morning would arrive and with it everything that mornings brought — their daughter, the day, the work, the ordinary and necessary forward motion of a life that had been built from harder materials than either of them had started with. But not yet. For now the kitchen was dark and quiet and Aiden’s hand was in hers and the book was in the next room and outside the window the world was slowly, without hurry, becoming light.

I was hysterically trying to unplug the flash drive but Aiden was blocking me from doing it. "Enzo, this is fun, isn't it?" He was so innocent that I couldn't hit his fucking face.

I hear him come over to join me, and he snatches my book away, now earning my eyes. " Chloe, you can't carry on like this. I can't watch you disappear on us like this. This is just not healthy. You -----------" We hear the front door open and close, before Owen appears at the doorway. He looks like he hasn't shaved in quite some time now. " I'm going out." Aiden says, getting up and leaving. I watch Owen come over and take Aiden's place. When I reach out my hand to take my book, he beats me to it and places it far out of reach.

Once he was out of sight, Aiden glanced in the direction of the bathroom and made a disgusted expression as the restroom incident popped back into his mind. “Asshole,” he muttered, trying to refocus on the book in front of him. But after reading for a few minutes, he found himself sighing again. It was frustrating as hell that he didn’t even understand what was in the book. It looked like ancient script from a spellbook. He couldn’t make sense of any of it. “Damn this book…” he gritted out, about to close the textbook when he heard a voice right beside his ear. It was soft and gentle. He knew immediately it was Tristan since they were the only ones in the dorm, and he sat frozen in place.
