And like a fool, I believed that if I kept paying, someday, he'd love me back. After graduation, I funded his startup. The second it took off, he married the campus belle. He had the nerve to claim he earned everything through nothing but hard work. So, I crashed his wedding, and he buried a knife in my chest. "Only when you're dead, Eve Roosevelt. Only then will my pathetic past stay buried." When I opened my eyes again, I was face-to-face with a scowling Albert. "You can't scrape together a few hundred thousand dollars? It's Bianca's birthday. Are you trying to humiliate me?" I looked around the room and rolled my eyes. "Sure, I'll pay. But first? Kneel. You look pretty enough. Consider it charity, peasant."

Cette languette de canette n'est pas un objet ordinaire, tu sais. Vincent me l'avait donnée quand nous étions encore des enfants. Elle symbolise l'amour éternel qui ne s'éteindra jamais. Maintenant, je te la donne. » Les paroles de Joséphine me transpercent le cœur. Je tremble violemment, comme si mon cœur était coupé en mille morceaux. Cependant, Vincent se contente de rire. « Joséphine a toujours des idées ridicules. Elle plaisante, Angela. Ne prends pas ses paroles au sérieux. » « Oh, je ne le ferai pas. » Je jette la languette de la canette dans le feu de joie, laissant échapper un petit rire sec. « Cette cérémonie est annulée. » Vincent m'attrape la main avant de me serrer dans ses bras. « Arrête de chercher à semer la zizanie, Angela ! Nous avons trouvé l'anneau, n'est-ce pas ? Cette alliance affectera l'avenir de nos meutes ! Ce n'est pas toi qui prends les décisions ici ! » Je me dégage de l'étreinte de Vincent, captant une trace d'odeur écœurante qui flotte autour de lui, une odeur qui n'est pas la mienne. « Il est vrai que la meute du Lac de la Lune va former une alliance avec la meute du Pierre Brun, mais mon futur compagnon n'est pas nécessairement toi. »
