She staggered back, clutching at the handle with clawed fingers that trembled, not from pain, but from the raw terror of what was to come. She collapsed to her knees. Her skin began to crack. Veins pulsed beneath the surface, black and glowing, before splitting open like lightning fracturing the sky. Her body spasmed, her screams dissolving into gurgles. And in front of my eyes, Nyra crumbled into ash. And at the heart of the blackened dust, something small and solid remained. A dark glossy stone. A demon’s core. I stared at it in silence, my fingers still tight around the dagger’s hilt, my breath ragged. My heart beat not just for me, but for the life within me.

He gestured at me. "You can't kill me, Silas. I own this fucking city... and I will get back everything you shitheads took from me." His smile dropped. "I will end The Black Rose..." he seethed. "One petal at a time." He laughed. "Isn't that exciting?" He put his hands in his pockets and turned around, not caring about the gun being aimed at his back. Lorenzo and Noir were behind Silas, along with several men that hadn't been there before, pointing their guns at the opposing men.

I held it with both hands. A fistful of my hair was snatched and he turned me to fully look at him. Before I could register his features, I pushed the sword upwards and into his abdomen as far as I could. His blood splattered on my nightwear and across my face. That was when I noticed his eyes. Or his lack of eyes thereof. He had no eyes, just like the woman at the tower. Just a face with every other feature asides eyes. I screamed when his body came tumbling down on me but now, he was lifeless. Using the last ounce of my energy, I pushed him aside and stood to my feet.

The door creaks open, and Axel quickly slumps against me like he’s still bound in chains. Something in the air changes entirely: electrifies and empties at the same time. I gulp. Cold porcelain bites into my skin, and Axel lets out a low growl. He moves closer to me, covering my body as best as he can. “Miss Blackwood,” the new, ominous voice rings out. Their voice feels like a shot of darkness, washing out the addictive feel of magic rushing through me, “I’m glad we can finally meet. My name is Nester Rist.”

Pushing it open, I was greeted by a sight that would be seared into my mind forever. Sebastian was clutching at his shoulder where a deep wound had blood spilling all down his arm, Narcissa holding a black dagger over her head. Gus wiggled on the altar behind her, covered in the entrails as the Blood Moon rose above him. Black gates in the sky, holding back a horde of daemons and a Black Wolf the size of a mountain with red eyes. He was real, the Deceiver was real, and the malice he carried with him blanketed the air like a miasma.

The black sword came down as fast as a streak of cold shadow. Maya rolled across the hard floor of the Unwritten City. Her ripped lab coat snagged on the corner of a giant stone book. The sword hit the ground right where her head had just been, tossing up sparks of dark energy.
