Since my lunch was unfortunately ruined by those rude, ugly bitches, I’d stopped by a roadside dessert store on our way here. I didn’t intend to get her anything, not something so cheap for a first gift at least, but when I tried the cookies, they were delicious. They were buttery, soft, melt-in-your-mouth good. So I got extra. And somewhere between impulsiveness and desperation, I figured... maybe Silver would like them too?

I step out of the bathroom and run down the stairs where Ally, Lyra, Tess, and Chloe are in the kitchen baking cookies. Peanut butter with brown sugar crystals and a Hershey kiss on top. When Tess sees me she smiles "hey we were hoping this would cheer you up" she says as she rolls a ball of dough into the brown sugar crystal. I walk over to my friends and wrap them into a big group hug. "Thank you guys so much, you're the best" I tell them before pinching a glob of dough and popping it into my mouth. Moaning at the beautiful taste of peanut butter.

Two days with her and she already understands how my mind works. “And delicious fresh-baked cookies.” I spit the sentence out so fast it all sounds like one word. “They do traditional flavors, seasonal flavors, and two weekly flavors that they rotate, and this week it’s blueberry lemon and salted caramel chocolate chip and both of those are my favorite!” Goddess, I am rambling like fucking Wesley right now.

These are dark chocolate cookies with macadamia nuts. I blinked. What the hell? She's even stranger than she was on the first day.

" They're in the kitchen on the bottom shelf. Carla made them Tuesday." Donatella looked at me suspiciously. "Are you having some kind of episode?" she asked. "Goodnight, Tella." She looked at me for a long moment with the eyes that were exactly my eyes and saw everything mine saw, and I held her gaze with every resource available to me. "Almond cookies," she said finally. Oreos, Twinkies, chips, candy, the fucking mother-load. “Oh thank God,” she said. She walked over to the drawer and grabbed the Oreos, stuffed a whole cookie in her mouth. While I mixed the herbs, she opened her notebook and wrote something down, as she did whenever I mentioned a treatment she didn’t know about. The poor woman looked positively scared when I called her. “What’s your name?” I asked softly.” “Almond, my lady.” “It’s Joy, Almond. That’s my name, no need for special treatments.” I gave her the jar and three empty little fabric bags. “Elderberry and licorice. Teah’s infallible recipe for allergy.” Once more, mentioning Teah helped me overcome suspicions. “Oh, my mother used it,” she said, and grimaced. “It tasted awful.”

"Cynthia, bring me a three-hundred-year-old herb!" Seeing that the time was right, Leon tossed a small piece of Angel's Fruit into the pot and took the herb in Cynthia's hand, before throwing it in as well. The Angel's Fruit was a spiritual herb and its effect would be magnified in the combination of a three-hundred-year-old herb and a few other herbs. Leon then signaled Iris and the others to hand him a few other herbs and tossed them into the pot, before taking the spiritual energy from the Spiritual Pearl and sending it into the alchemy pot through his finger to combine the herbs.

“Mine kept me up for months, kicking like they wanted to run before they were born. Come here, let me get you something.” She moved to the pantry to pull out a tin of cookies, their sugary scent filling the air instantly. “These are my special ones made with honey and oats, good for calming the nerves. Take a few but then head straight back to bed, alright? Missing sleep will not do you or that pup any favors.” I took some cookies in my hands and met her warm eyes, filled with motherly affection. “Thank you, Aline. It is just… hard sometimes, at night. My mind will not stop. I don’t know how I’ll survive the days coming ahead.”
