Even she shifted uncomfortably, fingers twisting together nervously. “If that’s all,” I muttered, starting to rise. “Wait,” she said quickly, then reached behind her again and pulled out a small box. “I couldn’t think of anything to gift you. You already have… well, everything. So I made you this.” She opened the box carefully, and inside lay a simple black bracelet. Plain. Clearly handmade. “It might not look good compared to the things you usually buy yourself,” she added softly. “It doesn’t,” I said simply. “It looks cheap. And it’s definitely not something an Alpha should be seen wearing.”

Her expression scares me more than if she'd reached for the giant sword. She lets out a whistle so piercing I physically flinch. Across the room, the redhead springs upright, launched from a catapult. She strides toward us with impossible energy, still wiping tears of amusement from her face. Up close she's even more striking.
