Amelia nodded, but doubt lingered in her eyes.
“He said I was lucky,” Amelia whispered. “That I should be grateful.”
Isadora exhaled slowly through her nose.
“That is what people say when they want you silent,” she said. “Gratitude is easier to demand than obedience.”
Amelia’s fingers twisted together.
“I did not sleep well,” she admitted. “I kept thinking you would not come.”
Isadora turned toward her fully.
