The interior was small, spare. A spiral staircase led up to the lamp room, a tiny kitchen and sitting area below. Lena showed her the mechanism, the clockwork precision of the turning light, the backups, the protocols. It was simple. Repetitive. Steady.
"You don't have to be perfect," Lena said as they stood in the lamp room, looking out at the vast, grey sea. "You just have to be here. The light does the rest."
Maya touched the cool brass of the lamp. "What if I'm afraid?"
