“I was just checking to see if they needed anything.”
I gave her a small smile and nodded toward the bed. “They’re asleep now. You can stay a while if you want.”
She hesitated, but sat by the window, the moonlight spilled over her pale skin, softening her features. Hazel eyes, dark brown hair. I sat beside her.
“They’re the sweetest,” Ansel said, her voice low. “They remind me of my younger siblings.”
“You have siblings?” I asked gently.
“Had,” Ansel corrected, her voice barely audible. “They didn’t make it past the last winter...”
