Chapter One: Unravelled

I stumbled out of the hospital, my scrubs clinging to me like a second skin. The neon lights flickered as I clutched my bag, exhaustion weighing me down. All I wanted was to crawl into bed and let the world disappear, but life had other plans.

My phone buzzed just as I was about to get into my car. I fetched it out of my pocket, hoping it was Jason, my expression turning hopeful. But it was a message from an anonymous number. I furrowed my brows, quickly unlocking my phone to see what was so urgent.

"Emma, you deserve the truth. Jason is with another woman right now. I've seen them at The Silver Moon Bar. She's some rich heiress. – A friend."

My heart sank, dread pooling in my stomach. I felt paralysed for a moment, contemplating whether to ignore it or go investigate. As much as I wanted to trust Jason, a gut feeling told me something was off.

Deciding I needed to see it with my own eyes, I drove to The Silver Moon Bar, my heart pounding. When I arrived, the bustling crowd and the dim lights seemed to mock my anxiety. I weaved through the crowd, searching desperately.

And then I saw him.

Jason was, indeed, with another woman. She was laughing, her hand resting possessively on his arm. My chest tightened as I pushed through, my breathing becoming erratic.

"Jason?" My voice wavered, barely a whisper.

He turned, a mixture of surprise and annoyance flickering in his eyes. "Emma, what are you doing here?"

"I... I got a text," I stammered. "What is this?"

The woman beside him snorted. "Who is this, Jason?"

"She's no one," Jason replied, his voice cold and distant. "Emma, you need to understand. We're not mates. You knew that. I'm moving on."

"Moving on?" I echoed, my eyes burning. "Are you serious? You're just going to discard me like that?"

He sighed, exasperated. "Look, Emma. It's for the best. She's wealthy and can offer me what you can't. Just face it; you don’t have a wolf. You were never truly part of my life."

I stared at him in disbelief, my world crumbling around me. Without another word, I turned and fled the bar, tears streaming down my face.

By the time I reached my apartment, anger had replaced my sorrow. I slammed the door shut, sinking to the floor. My heart still ached, raw and exposed, but I needed to pull myself together. Maybe Jason was right; maybe I wasn’t enough. But I was kind, caring, and funny, attributes they never valued.

The quiet stillness of my apartment was deafening. I had always felt detached from my wealthy family's extravagant lifestyle, preferring to live independently. At least my tiny apartment represented my freedom, imperfect as it was.

My phone buzzed again, breaking the silence. Expecting another cruel twist of fate, I hesitated before answering. It was my mother.

"Emma, you need to come home. Now."

"I’m not interested in any family gathering, Mother. You know that."

"Emma, it’s a family obligation. Be here." The line went dead.

With a groan, I got up and splashed cold water on my face. However tempting that might be, I couldn’t ignore my family forever. Inhaling deeply, I grabbed my car keys and headed out.

The drive to my family’s mansion was filled with conflicting emotions. As much as I loved them, especially my sister Lena, their ruthlessness and greed always gnawed at me. My heart ached just thinking about facing them.

Arriving at the mansion, I was greeted by the usual grandeur: tall gates, manicured lawns, and a house too large for any reasonable need. As I walked in, the familiar scent of luxury made me feel more out of place than ever.

“Emma, there you are,” my mother said as I stepped into the main hall. Her eyes swept over me, thinly veiled disapproval evident. “Could you at least try to look presentable?”

“What’s this about, Mother?” I asked, forcing a smile.

“Just a typical family gathering. Lena and Nicholas are here. You should join us,” she said, pushing me toward the dining room.

Stepping in, I saw my sister Lena at the head, with her husband Nicholas beside her.

“Emma, darling,” Lena drawled, her voice dripping with condescension. “So good of you to join us.”

“Lena. Nicholas,” I greeted, keeping my tone neutral. Taking my seat at the table.

My father stood up at the other end of the table, clearing his throat dramatically to catch everyone's attention. His face bore an unsettling mix of excitement and authority.

“Family, it’s been too long since we had a gathering like this,” he began, glancing pointedly at me as if my absence had been the sole reason for the infrequent family meetings. “But that’s not why we’re here tonight. I have incredible news and couldn’t wait to share it with you all.”

I leaned closer to Lena, curiosity gnawing at me. “What’s his big news?” I whispered.

Lena shrugged nonchalantly, a smirk playing on her lips. “Who knows? It's probably another one of his brilliant business ventures.”

My father continued, oblivious to our side conversation. “It’s truly wonderful to have everyone here. I realise we’ve had our differences, but tonight, we’re united.” He paused, his eyes locking onto Nicholas for a moment longer than necessary. “And I couldn’t be prouder.”

I rolled my eyes internally. My father’s ostentatious display felt like another one of his theatrical performances aimed mostly at Nicholas. Everything seemed to be a show when he was around; it was as if our family's very existence revolved around impressing the Alpha.

“Really, Dad?” I thought to myself sarcastically. “Is Nicholas supposed to clap or bow down now?”

Before I could delve deeper into my own thoughts, Nicholas stood up, interrupting my father’s speech. The air grew tense with the silence that followed.

“I’m sorry, Mr. Stevenson, but I have urgent business to attend to,” Nicholas said firmly. He leaned down and planted a brief kiss on Lena’s head. “I’ll be back later, darling.”

Lena’s smile was brittle, her eyes flickering with a hint of annoyance. “Of course, Nicholas. We’ll be waiting.”

Without another word, Nicholas strode out of the room, his presence leaving a palpable void. My father’s face faltered momentarily, but he quickly regained his composure.

“Anyway, where was I?” he said, attempting to recapture the room’s attention. “Ah yes, this is going to change everything for us!”

But I tuned out, my mind drifting away from my father’s grandiose plans. I knew whatever his big news was would just be some sort of scheme that he thought would make him more money but would end up failing, and he would have Nicholas bail him out like always.

“Emma, are you even listening?” My mother’s sharp voice snapped me back to the present.

“Sorry, what?” I replied, blinking away my thoughts.

“I said, isn’t this exciting?” she repeated, her eyes narrowing slightly.

“Absolutely,” I lied, forcing a smile.

As my father finally concluded his speech to polite applause, I managed to slip away to the kitchen, needing a moment to collect my thoughts. Lena followed me, curiosity evident on her face.

“What's really going on, Emma?” she asked, leaning against the countertop.

I shrugged, pretending to busy myself by arranging fruit in a bowl. “What do you mean?”

“You were miles away during Dad's announcement. Something's up.”

I sighed, knowing it was futile to lie to her now. “I found Jason with another woman tonight. He—he's moved on.”

Lena’s eyes softened for the briefest moment before hardening again. “Men can be such pigs.”

I nodded, appreciating her rare moment of empathy. “Yeah, I guess they can.”

“Emma, don’t let him ruin you. You have your own life to live,” she said, her voice surprisingly earnest. It wasn’t often that Lena dropped her guard, but when she did, I almost saw the sister I used to admire before she became like the rest of my family.

“I know. Thanks, Lena.”

She simply nodded, straightening herself. “Well, we should get back before Father sends a search party.”

Chapter Two: Whispers of Doubt
The lounge room was awash in expensive chandeliers' warm, golden glow bouncing off the polished mahogany furniture. My father was in full swing, his voice booming with excitement as he outlined another business venture, punctuating each declaration with grand gestures. For a brief moment, I envied his enthusiasm. It must be nice to live so blissfully blind to the real world.Lena sat next to me, her phone clutched in her manicured hand. She seemed disinterested at first, fidgeting with her diamond bracelet, but then I noticed her glancing at her phone with a smile, her eyes lighting up in a way I hadn't seen before. Suddenly, she stood up, her chair scraping against the floor."Where are you going?" our father asked, more out of obligation than curiosity."I need to make a call. I'll be right back," Lena said, her voice tinged with urgency.I watched her disappear down the hallway, something about her behaviour nagging at me. It was rare to see Lena smile like that. Chapter Three: Fractured Bonds
As we sped to the hospital, I sat next to Lena as she gripped my hand tight. As we pulled up to the hospital, everyone jumped out, rushing inside. Getting to the front desk, my father began to ask where Nicholas was when a doctor came up behind us."Family of Nicholas Blackthorn?" he asked."Yes, I'm his wife, Lena", Lena answered, her voice quivering. “is he okay?”"I’m Dr. Carter. Nicholas sustained severe injuries in a car accident. He has multiple fractures in his legs and spine. Unfortunately, he might not regain full use of his legs."Lena gasped, and I felt her grip tighten on my arm. Seeing her like this, so fragile and vulnerable, stirred something in me. I wanted to hold her and take away all her pain."Can she see him?" I asked for her because I could see she was seconds away from having a breakdown.Dr. Carter nodded, and I went to let go of Lena's hand to let her follow the doctor, but she gripped my hand tighter, telling me that she wanted me with her.Together, we follo

Chapter Four: Awakenings and Secrets
The buzz of the morning commute surrounded me as I made my way to the hospital. My thoughts were a whirlpool, swirling with worries about Nicholas, Lena, and the recent betrayal I had uncovered in my own life. The fluorescent lights of the hospital entrance were a stark contrast to the gloom in my heart, the hum and bustle of the sterile environment a harsh reminder that life goes on, pain notwithstanding.Arriving at my station, I quickly stashed my things in a locker and made a beeline for Nicholas's room, ready to check on him and hopefully see Lena there. As I gently pushed open the door, my eyes widened in surprise. Nicholas lay there alone, his rugged face softened by the harsh whiteness of the hospital bed. Where was Lena? Her absence gnawed at me, her empty chair a silent testimony to her continued absence. I stepped back out of the room, determined to find some answers. Spotting Dr. Carter down the hall, I hurried toward him."Dr. Carter, how’s Nicholas doing today?" I asked

Chapter Five: Revelation and Rejection
I didn't want to go to the hospital. The thought of being around my family, playing along with their deceit and schemes, made my skin crawl. But Beta James had made it clear: Nicholas had awakened and demanded our presence. The word of the Alpha was law, and my feelings had no place in the immediate future. As I walked into the hospital with Lena and my parents trailing behind them, the tension between us was palpable. Lena’s manicured hand gripped her phone tightly, her face a mask of controlled panic, and my father’s silenced rage simmered beneath his business-casual facade. We stepped into Nicholas’s room. He was sitting up in bed, looking healthier than I had expected, but with a stern expression that spoke volumes. Guilt welled up inside me, choking my ability to form words. What could I say? That his wife had been lying to him? That she was already proclaiming love to another man in secret corners? It wasn’t my place, and I had no choice as much as I hated now being tangled in

Chapter Six: An Unexpected Proposition
The world outside seemed to blur as I walked aimlessly, the cold evening air nipping at my skin. The events at the hospital played over and over in my mind like a broken record. I kept thinking about Nicholas — the betrayal he felt, the rage in his eyes, and how he had dissolved their bond in front of us all. It was too much, too overwhelming. I found myself longing for solace in my small apartment, away from the chaos that had unfolded. As I entered my building, the familiar ding of the elevator seemed to invite a heavy sense of relief. Finally, the walls of my sanctuary surrounded me. I dropped my keys on the small table in the foyer and made a beeline to the lounge. I slid onto the couch and grabbed a half-eaten tub of vanilla ice cream from the freezer. Comfort food had always been my solace. Digging an oversized spoon into the tub, I let the cold sweetness melt across my tongue, hoping it would cool the turmoil inside me.A knock on the door interrupted the rhythmic sound of my s

Chapter Seven: Confrontations and Realisations
Leaving the hospital felt surreal. The world seemed oddly unchanged while my life was getting more tangled by the minute. The thickness of the envelope in my hand was a constant reminder of the complex web of loyalty, betrayal, and duty that now ensnared me. As I parked in front of my family's mansion, nausea churned my stomach. I couldn't bring myself to feel at home here anymore. I hesitated for a moment, running my fingers over the coarse edge of the envelope meant for Lena. With a sigh, I steeled myself and walked up to the door, opting to knock instead of strolling in as I used to. Something fundamental within these walls had changed, and barging in seemed wrong. The door creaked open, and there stood Lena. As soon as she saw me, her face twisted into an expression of pure rage. Her eyes blazed with fury. "What do you want?" she snapped venom in her voice. "Actually, I don't care," she spat out, turning sharply and storming off into the depths of the house.Taking a deep breath,

Chapter Eight: Decisions and Destinies
Returning to the hospital for my shift felt surreal. As the faces of familiar patients brought me a semblance of normalcy, anticipation ate at me. By the midpoint of my shift, I knew I couldn't delay the unavoidable any longer.Nicholas' room was at the end of the corridor. I took a deep breath, convincing myself that I could face him, that I could face everything. With trembling fingers, I pushed open the door."Nicholas?" I called softly. He turned to look at me, his piercing gaze unreadable. For a moment, the room suffocated in silence before I cleared my throat and took another step forward."I've come to tell you... I'll take the deal," I said, my voice steady despite the churning inside me. His eyes continued to bore into me, inspecting every minuscule flicker of emotion on my face. Finally, he spoke, "Good. I get discharged tomorrow at 10 am. I expect you to be there."Swallowing hard, I nodded, rummaging through my bag until I found the contract and pen. Silently, I placed th

Chapter Nine: Why Me
Nicholas POVAs soon as Emma left the room, the silence was a suffocating blanket. With a heavy sigh, I let my head fall back against the pillows, my mind spinning with conflicting emotions. The bitterness of Lena's betrayal was still fresh in my heart. It was as though the Moon Goddess herself took pleasure in twisting my fate in a cruel way, punishing me in ways that I wouldn’t wish upon my enemies.I closed my eyes and reached out to James, my Beta, through our mind link. **"James, Emma has agreed to be my nurse. Can you make up the guest bedroom for her?"** My silent request echoed in the empty spaces of my thoughts.James’s reply was unwavering. **"Understood, Alpha."**I took a moment to gather myself before speaking again. **"And I want you to pick her up tomorrow morning at 9 am."****"Understood, Alpha,"** came James’s prompt reply, his tone never faltering in its loyalty.Opening my eyes, I stared down at my useless legs. Chapter Ten: The Dawn of New Trials
The morning arrived, and the soft rays of dawn peeked through my thin curtains. As I lay in bed, the memories of the tumultuous events played over in my mind like an unending reel of misfortune and heartbreak. Nicholas’s request echoed in my head incessantly, making it impossible to find clarity. With a groan, I dragged myself out of bed, aware that today would irrevocably change the course of my life.I pulled on my scrubs, the familiar fabric feeling somewhat foreign now, given the immense responsibility that awaited me. For some reason, this job felt like it held a lot more than my normal nursing job. So much was relying on me not messing this up. I briskly moved to the kitchen and brewed a fresh pot of coffee. The rich aroma filled the room, offering me a small comfort. As I held the warm cup between my hands, preparing to take my first sip, a sharp knock on the door startled me.Letting out a frustrated sigh, I placed the cup down and headed towards the door. My first sip of coff
