“Get out and don’t come back.”
He chuckled, a low, humorless sound. “You think you can stop me, Annalise? A little candlestick against a trained assassin?”
Assassin. The word hung heavy in the air, a confirmation of my worst fears. Panic threatened to overwhelm me, but I pushed it down. Fear wouldn’t win this fight.
“Maybe not,” I said, my voice surprisingly steady. “But I can certainly make things difficult for you.”
And with that, I launched myself at him, the candlestick held high. He blocked the blow with his forearm, the metal clanging against bone. But the surprise attack had its intended effect. He was off balance, momentarily thrown off guard.
