It looks like a bruise that has never healed, but a much richer, vibrant red. Will mine be like that, or different? “It means he’s crazy.”

River's POV. Noah and I hadn’t really talked about the almost-kiss. Not on the car ride home, not in texts, not even when he sent me that dumb meme of a raccoon shoving Cheetos in its mouth with the caption “us at 3AM.” I’d stared at that meme longer than I’d like to admit, smiled a little too hard at it, and sent back something just as stupid, because that’s what we did. We joked. We laughed. We pretended like everything was normal.

I loaded my plate and ate and tried very hard not to think about anything specific and failed entirely because my body kept volunteering unsolicited highlights from the night before that I had not requested and could not turn off.
