A layout diagram of the bunker. Seven bunks, one incubation unit, the storeroom at the end of the hallway, the concrete-sealed door nearly two feet thick. In the bottom right corner of the diagram, a note in my own handwriting: "The apocalypse has to feel real. Push the heat up, make the water filthy — let the audience practically smell it. Dante whispered. “No,” June said, looking at her hands. “I’m talking to the metal. And the metal’s listening.” She turned to her mother. “We can save the city now. If I can do this, I can stop the Harvest for everyone.” Sarah’s eyes filled with tears. “June, look at the screen.” June looked. The world map wasn’t purple anymore. It was silver. The color spread out, swallowing the whole planet, crawling on like a liquid mirror. “The Foundation didn’t just want an army,” Sarah whispered. “They want a new Earth. They’re replacing dirt with metal. Water with oil. They’re turning the world into a machine.”

“Earthquakes. Floods. Collapses. I went into the broken buildings.” He says it without emphasis, which is how Maya has learned to recognize the things that cost him most. “Everyone runs out of a building when it comes down. Somebody has to be built to run in.” Maya says nothing. “Fifteen years going in after people.” His mouth shifts. “Then the world ends, and the apocalypse mostly removes the people part.” He looks again at the mark. “Now I clear rooms with nobody left inside and label them for a team that isn’t coming.” A small shrug. “Some habits are load-bearing. Pull them out, and I’m not entirely sure what’s keeping the rest of the wall standing.”

Lilith was gone. Maya rushed to the main console. The screen was scrolling in a terrifying red. TOTAL SYSTEM PURGE INITIATED. 45 SECONDS TO CORE MELTDOWN. "No, no, no," Maya’s fingers flew across the keys. Lilith hadn't wanted the key to rule. She had initiated a Scorched Earth protocol. If the servers melted, Astraea would cease to exist. The global supply chain would collapse, and Maya would be the one blamed for the greatest economic disaster in history.

It wrapped around Mirra’s ears until she couldn’t tell what was real and what was being fed into her skull. “See, Mirra?” it crooned, and the words carried the sickening texture of rot. “The earth’s fury, unleashed.
